I love skiing deep slush. The kind that kicks up a wall of wetness with every turn. Better yet, large slushy moguls. The kind that seem to explode on impact.

ive only been skiing one but what i love is
the views...breathtaking
theres something about the sun shining down on this massive snow covered mountain which is so beautiful
sitting in deep snow, its so comfy and wen its sunny you dont even get cold
but most of all
skiing itsself - carving your way down the hill with gravity propelling you

The pure cold air,
the smell of fresh powder,
the silence of the mountain in moonlight--- on the terrace of a mountain hotel
your first run down on the first day and realizing your body hasn't forgotten to ski!

Two things:
- You're at the top of a mountain, 9 months since you last saw snow, boots tight, gloves on, edge forward..... that feeling of achievement when you realise that you haven't completely forgotten how to ski.
- After studying italian for a couple of years in the safe confines of a classroom, the first time I was actually able hold a conversation with someone in a foreign language . It may not sound much but I get a real buzz out of going to Italy and being able to talk to folks in a language I started learning in my mid-forties.

I saw this thread earlier in the day and no to add my twopenneth
- I still get a vaguely transcendental feeling when in the mountains which even now thrills
- that once a holiday feeling when it all comes together that makes you feel like a ski god no matter how c**p you really are
- the almost silent swoosh of your skis through new snow
- being almost completely able to cut off from work
- meeting lots of friendly new people - especially as you all have a common interest
- the beer and camaraderie at the end of a day
- and more recently the feeling of pride watching my 7 year old ski
- a strange anoraky appreciation of all the technology
I hope I never tire of it

MarjMJ,
And the fifteenth
Skiing behind a line of piste bashers in perfect corduroy.
Waiting in Austrian railway stations feeling like you're an extra in the Third Man.
Communicating with people who speak a different language to your own.
Sitting in a gondola and wondering how they ever built it up here.
The feeling that there is no other place on earth.
Not reading British newspapers and the only TV you watch is the resort's own channel to see what the weather is like up top.
Frauleins.
Strange looking but yummy fruit juice.
Cheesy Apres Ski music.

comprex, arv, so true. I simply don't understand why skiing enables me to eat three times as much as I normally do, and still lose weight. It's not as though I push myself that hard on the slopes.

- the whole family ski-ing together ( the only sport we all do and enjoy at the same time save racket games )
- a rare cig in the clean mountain air as well described by skimottaret
- no hangover in the mornings ( as long as I remember to leave the window open ! )

I don't understand why some people earlier in this thread thought that skiing a steep, narrow couloir where you have to do either jump turns or very tight controled turns somehow wasn't really skiing It certainly gives me pleasure and satisfaction. And a little nervousness when you look down it adds some extra spice. Surely a bit of challenge is fun too? I am assuming, of course, that you manage to do it reasonably well. Just getting down it won't really do.
For me the best is being high up on a mountain top in the sun with just a few friends and a guide - with huge views and otherwise nothing human in sight, looking down at a big, steepish but not ultra steep untouched slope of white powder down which I am about to launch myself - anticipating the feel of speed and ballance, the dynamics of the body and ski in harmony with slope and the snow - my body ballancing the forces of long swooping turns as I carve out the first tracks in a new world.
But, then, it doesn't feel like there is anything odd there, so I suppose I haven't answered the question. OK, I too like slush - will that do?
