Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I love skiing deep slush. The kind that kicks up a wall of wetness with every turn. Better yet, large slushy moguls. The kind that seem to explode on impact.

Two things:

- You're at the top of a mountain, 9 months since you last saw snow, boots tight, gloves on, edge forward..... that feeling of achievement when you realise that you haven't completely forgotten how to ski.

- After studying italian for a couple of years in the safe confines of a classroom, the first time I was actually able hold a conversation with someone in a foreign language . It may not sound much but I get a real buzz out of going to Italy and being able to talk to folks in a language I started learning in my mid-forties.

I saw this thread earlier in the day and no to add my twopenneth

- I still get a vaguely transcendental feeling when in the mountains which even now thrills
- that once a holiday feeling when it all comes together that makes you feel like a ski god no matter how c**p you really are
- the almost silent swoosh of your skis through new snow
- being almost completely able to cut off from work
- meeting lots of friendly new people - especially as you all have a common interest
- the beer and camaraderie at the end of a day
- and more recently the feeling of pride watching my 7 year old ski
- a strange anoraky appreciation of all the technology

I hope I never tire of it

Frosty nose hairs

Vodka from the hip flask - It never is as cold as that at home

Feeling normal, as I swish down the piste, rather than fat, dumpy and uncoordinated which I seem to be with every other sport I try

That 1st pint when you get back off piste

Lots and lots of raclette and meat

The smell of woodsmoke on a really crisp evening and the churchbells in the villages

That squeaky noise skis make on packed snow snowHead snowHead

Looking at the piste map and working out your total ascent and descent for the day

Working out where to go tomorrow...

Sigh...not long, not long...

I feel decidedly "high" as soon as I step out of the transfer vehicle--at resort level---and this transcendental feeling stays with me all the time at that altitude and on the slopes... So if it is the thin air. I am puzzled why this makes us feel so good, instead of feeling unwell... Puzzled Madeye-Smiley

I don't understand why some people earlier in this thread thought that skiing a steep, narrow couloir where you have to do either jump turns or very tight controled turns somehow wasn't really skiing Puzzled It certainly gives me pleasure and satisfaction. And a little nervousness when you look down it adds some extra spice. Surely a bit of challenge is fun too? I am assuming, of course, that you manage to do it reasonably well. Just getting down it won't really do.

For me the best is being high up on a mountain top in the sun with just a few friends and a guide - with huge views and otherwise nothing human in sight, looking down at a big, steepish but not ultra steep untouched slope of white powder down which I am about to launch myself - anticipating the feel of speed and ballance, the dynamics of the body and ski in harmony with slope and the snow - my body ballancing the forces of long swooping turns as I carve out the first tracks in a new world.

But, then, it doesn't feel like there is anything odd there, so I suppose I haven't answered the question. OK, I too like slush - will that do?
