@brandegg, yep, also good is a schmaltzbrot, which is basically a slice of dark bread and dripping with tiny crunchy bits of crackling, with lots of wafer thin sliced raw onions, costs about €2.80, |
oooo that sounds amazing! I can't believe I've been to Austria so many times but haven't tried half the stuff in this thread. Looking forward to Zell in March, I like the sound of that meat pasty thing as well.
I have tried a germknoedel, I wondered what the boobs were that everyone was eating so I ordered one. FILLING.
I'm normally boring and have goulasch soup or chicken.

+1 on the Brettljause. Always entertaining watching peopls's faces when they think the horseradish is grated cheese, load it on bread and then take a bite... |
Yes. This happened to me.

Basically it's all carb heavy stodge with portions that are many times Michelin size. I'm always surprised at the number of people who can put away a soup, full schnitzel and a germnknodel/kaiserschmarrn and then still movr. |
Nooooo surely not.
I remember the first time I went to Austria I thought a Germknoedel was a dessert for after a main course.
I didn’t make that mistake again, now I have it only as a main and have nothing else.
The same applies to Kaiserschmarrn, only ever as a main not as a dessert.

@clarky999, there are a few heurigers in Salzburg, but they lack the authenticity of the Lower Austrian ones.

@Richie_S, as you will be going to Mayrhofen, at the bottom of the Penkenbahn there is a shop opposite that sells meat rolls of varying descriptions. Very tasty and they are only about €3. Ideal for an apres ski snack about 4pm if you’re not going to be having your evening meal until later on.

@clarky999, marillenknödel, definitely. Not something you'll find in your average hütte though.
