Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recommend me an Austrian dish to eat in resort!

To my embarrassment I have not especially spent much time on Austrian slopes... circumstance has generally meant i’ve been to France.

Still, i’ve just booked a long weekend with a couple of buddies to Mayrhofen in March.

Totally looking forward to some apres ski nonsense, of which I have seen some good recommendations thus far on the forum...

But, can you recommend me some traditional Austrian lunchtime dishes I should not miss out on?

Germknoedl (massive dumpling with jam inside and usually covered in loads of warm vanilla sauce)
Brettljausen (every kind of preserved pork on one plate)
Schweinshax'n (roast pork knuckle joint, like something from the Flintstones)

@Richie_S, have a couple of germknodels on the first day. They’ll keep you going for days if stuck in a crevasse.

+1 for gulaschsuppe.

Käsespätzle is my favourite!!
Def check out the Apfelstrudel which comes with a choice (I recommend fluffy cream, but you can have vanillesauce) and Kaiserschmarrn (fluffy pieces of pancakes which you dip in apple sauce) if you've not had them before. They are both amazing and delicious.

Meatloaf

Yeah but although they translate it as meatloaf it's very different to British or American meatloaf. The closest equivalent I'd say is cooked luncheon meat, very tasty with a Spiegelei and some potato salad. Madeye-Smiley

My faves:

Gulaschsuppe (beef goulash soup, thick & spicy, often served with bread)

Wiener Schnitzel Cordon Bleu (pork cutlet with a layer of ham & cheese fried in breadcrumbs, often served with fries)

Ripperl (ribs, often with a spicy rub, had some great spicy ribs this year served with a baked potato with sour cream)

Apfelstrudel mit Vanillesauce (apple strudel with vanilla custard)

Topfenstrudel mit Vanillesauce (curd cheese strudel with vanilla custard)

Kaiserschmarrn (pancakes chopped into strips, dusted with icing sugar and served with plum, cranberry or apple compote, the pancakes often have raisins too)

There is often the usual international fare like burgers, hot dogs, pasta, lasagne, pizza etc which is usually very tasty.

Linseneintopf ( excuse spelling) - very hearty lentil and veg stew served with a couple of sausages or a big dumpling.

Kalbsrahmbuschel (sp again) another stew, this one containing all the very best mysterious bits of animals. You'll often be asked if you know what's in it when you order!

A dirty curryworst is surprisingly popular....

+1 for kaseknockern. Cheesetastic.

Basically it's all carb heavy stodge with portions that are many times Michelin size. I'm always surprised at the number of people who can put away a soup, full schnitzel and a germnknodel/kaiserschmarrn and then still movr.

An astonishingly appetite-curbing thread. Almost the only one of these dishes I like is a well-made Gulaschsuppe.

@holidayloverxx, "Blutwurstgrostl" - it just gets better!

@PORTMAN, Those Zillertaler Krapfen look just the thing to stuff in a pocket for an 'on lift' snack if feeling a little peckish!

Thanks for all the recommendations - can't wait to tuck in!

Wot no Wiener Schnitzel? Has to be calf of course, not Schnitzel Wiener Art, which is pork and is not a patch on the real thing.

Seems we have missed Topfenpalatschinken. To die for.
