Just returned from a great week in Morzine (first visit) - I've posted a review here: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=97704
Thank you guys for this thread which kept me going until the trip... now I shall be dipping in regularly to see how the rest of the season pans out.

BrightonSki, if it hits 30C I will be surprised.
Warmer? Forecast is for seasonal average...

.... well, not as cold as the last few weeks anyway

Was warmer today only about -4 this morning. The snow just keeps on falling, been coming down consistently now for nearly 24 hours and no sign of stopping. It's amazing

Conditions over the last few days can only be described as superb. Friday was pretty close to the best conditions I have skied in anywhere, anytime. Deep, fluffy powder and blue skies, what more could you ask for? Snowed all last night and although visibility was poor higher up the conditions this morning were again superb - a full morning of "snorkel" powder and fresh tracks. At one point whilst looking back up for Ardoyne Jnr, all I could see was a moving snow cloud, no sign of the body that was creating it - fantastic.
Anybody heading out is in for a treat.
Oh and it is snowing again.
Bob

Forecast is for another full day of snow and then a couple of clearer days, it doesn't get better than this. Anyone thinking of sneaking a short trip in now's the time, great conditions and just before the peak holidays

Just got back from Portes du Soleil.
Unbelievable amounts of snow. It was throwing it down when we arrived on Thursday night. Next day was variable sun/light snow. Second day the same. Third pretty much bluebird. Yesterday was heavy snow all day long and stupendous amounts of powder, everywhere. Following the Prodains lift down through the trees saw me in stuff that was chest deep at times - and my WhiteDot ones, even with the bindings adjusted back and me really concentrating on decent powder technique, were struggling to stay afloat enough to be anything but knackering.
Normally, I think my mid-fattish skis are a bit of a vanity. They really proved their worth on and off piste this time around.
However, having gone out every night past 2am and still been on the lift by 9, I am broken.
Lady F, a far better skier than me (been going regularly since she was three; her family are American and have a place in Snowbird) was struggling on her old, short (165cm) K2 Apache Recons. Skiing it fine, but finding it very hard going on the legs - she retired to the piste. Where she remained one of the neatest and most technical skiers I saw out there all holiday. We rented a pair of fat things for her, and she was doing things through trees that frankly terrified me on the last day.
Loads of big, powdery moguls everywhere. Swiss wall was actually skiable with all the snow (but still not particularly enjoyable to a skier of my standard - I got down it looking and feeling reasonably good, but was shattered at the end, and definitely made a load of mistakes). The blacks off the Grandes Combes were superb, most of the reds huge fun. We had a second week skier with us for the trip, so did a lot of blue runs - one thing I really have noticed: they are flat in that area - lots of walking! Even he wanted to get on the reds after day 2. PDS really is about the reds and blacks, I think. Pleney and surrounding areas horribly crowded and best avoided, Nyon empty but dull (piste) runs.
It was still dumping when I left. There was a foot on the cars ver a 24 hour period when I left, and it was still snowing.
Frankly, I have never seen anything like it. Not a trace of hardpack anywhere, even in the first three days (light dustings overnight)
One thing that surprised me. I am an advanced (but ny no means expert) skier - who has advanced by a) having a ski instructor girlfriend who teaches me constantly, b) regular private lessons and c) by sheer bloody amount of ski days over the past 4 years. The bumps and heavy snow really, really show up the deficiencies in one's skiing: and the general standard out there was really quite average. I haven't really noticed before, as I have never seen so much powder in the PDS before. But it was full of people sliding around too fast and hitting other folk - and the skiers were far more to blame than the boarders, from what saw. That said, very friendly atmosphere, plenty of courtesy on lifts (and after one of these collision incidents), so no harm done. It was just interesting - especially hearing the English chaps in our gondola proclaiming themselves advanced skiers - and then sitting back and sliding all the way down a red run!

I don't think I can remember a season like this for snowfall...Guessing there are seasoned snow heads out there who can put me right. Been in the PdS ten years and sure there has not been a season so good?

summer, you know?? For once (!) I can't recall a better season in my experience, since 1988.
More experienced dogs like Zzz or shep may choose to correct me

Harry Flashman, I am quite sure you haven't. But not wanting to get all up_my_own_saisonnaires_@ss about it, but it has been, so far, at least one of the best if not the best seasons I've experienced (or at least kept a close eye on).
Consistent, frequent snow, cold, etc.*
*referring to Northern Alps. I understand the Pyrenees, in places, are having trouble due to too much snow...

Anyone out in Morzine at moment? What are conditions like? Plenty of fresh untracked powder following recent snowfalls, or most of it been snaffled already?

maidstone98, you can pretty well assume that anything obvious is tracked out within 48 hours of the snow landing. If you're prepared to hike then there is always stuff available.

This time next week we will hopefully be sitting in our chalet in Chatel suitably suited and booted.... not literally of course as that would be a little uncomfortable sitting on the couch having a little glass of vino... But ready for our first day of skiing this year. So excited have all the gear out in the spare room ready for packing. Yippee. Snow snow snow this week please then blue skies and sunshine for week after, with a topup each night. Thank you kindly. 😃😀

Not a cloud in sight in Chatel and no queues to speak of.
Nice squeaky snow in most places with a few fresh patches left if you seek them out. Looking good for the week!

Awesome weather, still cold enough so pistes are ok later in the day (some a little lumpy md afternoon). Loads of snow depth and queues not too bad if you know where to go. Fantastic day. Looking like a sunny week! (Morzine that is)
