Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Had another super day in Fieberbrunn - sun and blue skies. Here's a view towards the Gatterl button lift with the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge in the background ...

I thought the pistes were perfect but a man I spoke to on a lift complained about them being hard (and about the south-facing Reckmoos Süd run being soft - you can't please some people Laughing). It's true that by the afternoon they runs were mostly very smooth and hard. Off-piste was tracked and hard work. But some people had worked even harder and left tracks on the Wildseeloder - not me!

High temperatures are forecast for the weekend and little new snow. However, I don't see any problems for skiing next week, at least higher up. Pistes will be hard packed, I expect.

I didn't intend to ski today but then I had to - life is hard Very Happy. This time I skied the Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski circus, starting and finishing at the Schönleitenbahn. Weather was again fantastic. Here's a photo taken from the Reiterkogel above Hinterglemm, with the Schattberg West on the left of the picture and the Zwölferkogel towards the right.

I made my first ever descent of the Zwölfer Nordabfahrt (it didn't exist in my previous Hinterglemm existence). It's not me in the picture ...

Pistes were again mostly pretty hard (and off-piste uninviting), though the lower section of the Schattberg piste had been helped by artificial snow. Here a picture looking across Saalbach and with the Schattberg living up to its name ...

heidiky, as you are pimping your services as well, maybe a donation to this site and a link to snowHeads on your web page will be a way of returning the favour? It is after all what all the other commercial posters have to do!

RetroBod, There are quite a few of us who are locally based - Espri (see above) actually lives in the middle of the All-star Pass area - and that is permanently, not just for the winter season. His knowledge of the area is second to none having been based out here for considerably longer than anyone else!

Zell: lots of dark clouds coming in this afternoon and the wind has got up. fingers crossed it might bring some snow; the pistes coudl do with freshening up. I had a couple of scary skids today, and while I could ski through the hard pack to reach a bit of snow it's stilll unnerving. Quick trip to Kitzsteinhorn this morning; snow definitely better there.

Great weather in Schladming - was there from last Friday and moved last night to Bad Gastein.
Very sunny with hardly any cloud and perfect pistes, it was cold at night warming up during the day with some temperatures on the sunny chairs showing even +6.
Great resort with lots of long, fast reds.
Sunny and warm weather again today in Bad Gastein. Schlossalm area is great, good snow and the 10km run on the back (1440 altitude difference) - just MAGIC.
Shame about the snow just above the Bad Gastein - no snowmaking and it shows - lots of brown spots everywhere.

First time in 5 days the clouds started to appear from the north. However the forecast is still rather sunny for tomorrow so we might be heading to Sportgastein Very Happy

Are the brown spots on the piste? I'd heard it was alright. Not so good with this warm weekend predicted.

Kersh, hmm maybe a few on the piste can be found too, on the cat tracks, hard to guess if they are officially pistes though. But it is only that part under the Stubnerkogel gondola. Definitely they should invest there as it is rather uninviting start for those first time in the area. The rest has plenty of snow.

Trying to decide now.... Sportgastein tomorrow, Dorfgastein on Friday or the other way around.......

Tom W, that piste under the lower part of the Stubnerkogel Bahn has needed updating for as long as i've been going to Bad Gastein. It's effectively a road which is narrow in places. They want to cut a proper wide piste through the tres but the landowner won't let them. rolling eyes Long story .....

With the current weather forecast, i'd go to Dorfgastein before it warms up. Either place is great ... and very different!

Samerberg Sue, Is your definition of "pimping" that a poster has a "clickable" signature?
I have looked through all posts by heidiky on this thread and cannot see anything in them to warrant an accusation of "pimping".
I would not even have considered clicking on her signature until i read your accusatory post, but you piqued my curiosity and i could not resist. Maybe you're her "pimp".
Please explain why you are right and i am wrong.

Straying OT a bit, but I personally like the fact that people have sigs advertising stuff like this as long as it's very unobtrusive, like heidky's or Kersh's, for example. It's not in your face, it's not over-promotion. As long as it stays very small and subtle, it makes perfect sense to me. I'd be concerned if it was too "commercial"; small personal businesses, whether holiday lets or instruction, often need a helping hand. I also value the openness as its clear where any vested interest might lie.

I agree with Geoff. I haven't found anything that heidiky says as anything other than helpful information. It's clear there are others who live there year round and their posts are also very helpful but I don't think the heidiky posts are less helpful because she is only there for the season. I don't see any of her posts "selling" her services either. I only clicked on the website because I was curious and in my view there's nothing wrong with putting a website under your signature as lots of people do it so perhaps the fault lies elsewhere.

geoffkay, freshlegs, needles, Another well-known instructor was doing exactly what you have picked up on and we lost their much more valuable considered input to the Bend the knees threads amongst others. All the people with a commercial link, be it an apartment or another service have either contributed to the site and/or provide links to it on their web pages

As far as I can make out ANYONE who has a professional link in their signature and intends to make money one way or another, it is called "pimping" here. Heidi came on here after her employers/partners Blacksheep were warned about the same thing.

As relative new contributors maybe you are not aware of the background.

I have nothing whatsoever against anyone being here, but I do feel that if the rules are applied to some people then they should be applied evenly and fairly to all. Not one rule for some with a huge list of exceptions.

They are plenty of us who live here permanently who were updating conditions and answering questions. Espri for one has an unrivalled knowledge of the area having been based here for many, many years. We have at least 4 other instructors in the area who do not feel the need to include their ski school/web page in their signatures.

pam w, Samerberg Sue, If there is no "pimp" content in a post i can't see what the fuss is about. Click on her link, or don't click on her link, individual choice surely? I have not seen one word in her posts regarding her business or profession, and that for me satisfies a no "pimping" clause. If a signature is allowed why on earth can it not be to a commercial web site? what harm can these signatures be to the Snowheads website?
I would be interested in your views on this. If other posters have been banned for having a commercial link in their signature i am well and truly flummoxed.

Sue,

And me. I didn't think heidiky was pimping.

Part, if not the whole, cause of our flummox is, however, the 'bendiness' of the rules. I know that admin favours flexibility on this sort of thing - not least because it is difficult to measure the contributions which people make to the forum - but it can lead to inconsistencies, not to mention heated arguments between people who know nothing of the facts.

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
For clarity, no one has ever been sanctioned simply for having a link in their signature.
Quite to the contrary, we would far prefer people, rather than to liberally sprinkle links through their posts (which really does come over as pimping), to place a discrete link in their sig to declare who they are and where their vested interests and specialist knowledge may lie.

We ask/encourage, those who link to their sites, to link back to snowHeads (for the good of the community as a whole). Many who do also choose to subscribe and/or pay us a commission on sales that they know to have been generated through snowHeads, however none of these things is compulsory - just hugely appreciated!

It is very important that people do post strong links to snowHeads on their sites and we have often mentioned that signature links to commercial sites may, in the future, become dependent upon reciprocal links but to date this is not so.

Gaudy, over-bearing, multiple, multi-coloured etc. links in signatures are strongly discouraged as inappropriate 'marketing'.

When asked, our guidance to commercial entities is:
"Place a discrete link in your signature to let people know who you are and what you do. Hence the more you contribute to the forum, the more people will be interested in finding out about you."
However we also serve this warning:
"Although snowHeads is a great place to improve your PR, do not be tempted to see the forum as a place to market your product. The forum community tends to respond aggressively to this as it is considered rude, as it would be were you to sit at the dinner table only joining the conversation to pimp your business to the other guests. "

To address specifically:
Quote:
Another well-known instructor was doing exactly what you have picked up on and we lost their much more valuable considered input to the Bend the knees threads amongst others.
If you're referring to whom I think, then I'm afraid what you say is quite wrong however, if you are not wrong then I'd like to know to whom you are referring? Perhaps you'd PM Admin details as I would like to address them either way.
Quote:

As delightful a state of affairs as that would be, I'm afraid that's simply not true Sad
Quote:
+1. The "rules" should be applied equally to all.
And we try very hard to do that - when anyone steps over the line, they are asked politely to step back over it whether they are well known and 'valuable' or total noobs - some take it with more grace than others though.

I'm told by the moderators that heidiky hasn't been anything but friendly and helpful throughout the course of her 56 post long snowHeads life - after a cursory glance, I would tend to concur so frankly I'm a tad bemused as to why she has been rounded on in this way. If anyone thinks there's something critical I may have overlooked, I'd welcome enlightenment but for the moment it all seems somewhat un-snowHeadly.
