7and2suited, what on earth are you ranting on about? What 'varmits'? When did I say skiing was incredibly dangerous?
Those 'pesky E111 cards' are there to give you access to medical treatment abroad. That's why the government bothers with them. One more time for the hard of thinking: they do not cover piste rescue, or repatriation to the UK. You have not been reimbursed for either of these costs via your EHIC. I suggest you look a bit more carefully at your receipts and your bank account.

7and2suited, I don't respond to insults in forums especially from those whose sole purpose seems to be to wind others up.
My only interest in this thread is to repeat what I said before to anyone looking for advice about snowsports holidays and insurance - don't pay any attention to such dangerous mischief from a troll - even a suited one. Make sure you have adequate travel insurance to cover things that your EU Healthcard most certainly doesn't.

Lou, I think you're right. when I worked in a department which occasionally dealt with repatriations bodies had to be embalmed before being airlifted. And you can only embalm a reasonably intact corpse. We had major problems with a lad who was stung to death by bees in Northern Nigeria. His mum was desperate to have his body brought back, and my staff were very reluctant to explain the gory reasons why it couldn't be done. We flew her out for a memorial service, instead. They had to, in the end and, believe it or not, HMG did pay - but only because the deceased had been on the payroll and died on the job.

Hurtle, I have friends who live in Romford. they're very nice people, and very good friends, but I have to say that Romford is the pits. if I lived in Romford I wouldn't want to be repatriated there, either.

Charming. I have in fact read all of your posts, and a rare load of old tosh they are too. You maintain that your EHIC card covers everything that a wintersports travel insurance policy would. This makes you a complete twerp.

Just back from Val Thorens where one of our group broke her leg on the piste.
She had carre neige with the lift pass, which got her to the medical centre.
Then out came the credit card 400 Euro.
Ambulance to Chambery another 400.
What do the 18 year olds do in this situation. Phone home I guess.

jimmjimm, generally they call their insurer's assistance company, which results in various guarantees of payment and minimal outlay.
I become increasingly convinced that no-one out there knows how their travel insurance actually works.

Repatriation does. When I was flown back from Geneva to Glasgow in a private plane (!) with a private nurse on board, it cost somewhat more than that. I'd broken my back and no commercial airline would take me.
I was just a little bit happy to be insured.

Buy insurance?
800 euro cash flow and return to England. What's the drama again?

7and2suited, if you're happy to carry your own risks, including private air repatriation and third party claims, then fine. No problem. Just don't bother to try to persuade everyone else to do the same.

7and2suited, we will grow up, we promise. It's just that you are so so ... well you've got to laugh. I just hope that any newbie who might be 'a sandwich short of a picnic' doesn't read your trash.
Fingers crossed you don't break your neck sometime, especially abroad.

That wont be a problem, piece of 4 by 2 stuffed down the back of your jumper. Couple of tie wraps around your head to stop it moving. Prop yourself up in the drivers seat and drive to Calais. Of course you will need a Telepeage for this.

there isn't any "drama".
Just no worries either due to having first paid somewhere in the region of £25 to insure against such costs.
In the above case, the costs were low.
they are often much higher.
And no, of course it doesn't cost £25,000 every time somebody needs medical repatriation, but it will usually be thousands or more. Many (probably most) of us don't have that much spare cash floating around on top of what we are spending to go skiing in the first place.
If you are rich enough to be able to cover almost any plausible expense that could be incurred as a result of a skiing accident, then fine, you don't need insurance, and in the long run, you will save money by not having it (obviously insurance companies are in business to make a profit for themselves, so average claims must be less than average payouts over their customer base).
But most of us are not that rich, and it makes economic sense for us to pay a small amount we can afford as effectively a bet we hope to "lose", but which if we "win" would have bankrupted us without it.

...and then what happened? Was this treated at a hospital in Chambery and were there further charges, or was this covered by the EHIC? Did they travel back on a flight at short notice, and how was this financed?

Paul-B,
The hospital in Chambery phoned the Insurance company and faxed the details.
Hospital was told that the operation would not be covered, and she came back to the resort.
The next day she was phoned by the insurance company and told that the operation would have been covered.
They arranged 2 extra seats on her flight home and she is going for her operation at home next Thursday.
Of course her 800 euro outlay will be covered by the insurance, but my question wasn't about that.
The question I asked was how are these expences covered on the spot by 18 year olds without the extra cash or credit cards.
Lizzard, .The medical centre demanded immediate payment and weren't willing to accept assurances from insurance companies.
It's up to you to claim back when you get home.

jimmjimm, I have the same worries about how my 20 and 21 year old student kids would cover their expenses in such circumstances. They often ski without us, so I buy the Carré Neige with their lift pass. If something happens, at least they can get assistance off the mountain, and off to hospital. I assume that the local ambulance companies will deal directly with French insurers?
