Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Great conditions in Val Thorens today after 2 days of snow. Almost everything open including 4th Valley, Cime de Caron and Mottaret liaison. Powder over a foot deep under Caron.

Frosty the Snowman, kitenski, Yes, looks like its going to be fenced off right down to below the area of 'gunbarrels' - time will tell though - everyone I know seems a bit put out by how wide it is!!

I am going to Meribel on Saturday. I think most the Meribel and Mottaret lifts will be open from this weekend. Only a few Mottaret lifts were open this week. Weather forecast looks ok at the moment too.

After a great day in La Plagne yesterday we headed across to the 3Vs today to see what that was like.

We parked in Le Praz and got the gondola up to C1850 to start skiing. Eventually ended up in Meribel, then Mottaret then Orelle for lunch via Val T. (Spag Bol 8.4E on special offer - v nice!!) Snow was in good condition all over with the Orelle slopes in particularly good condition.

After following the sun over to C1650 in the afternoon we finished with a very cold blast down the Combe De Saulire into C1850 to catch the lift back to Le Praz.

All in all a great day on the slopes but there are far less lifts and pistes open than usual. I guess they are saving them for the Christmas rush...........

snowforever, this chart gives a total accumilated forecast for the next 6 days in millimetres:

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rmgfs144sum.gif

It updates every 6 hours but as of now there's only 3mm of rain precipitation forecast for the area before Sunday. Looks to be very dry as far out as the forecast goes.

3mm of rain precipitation is roughly 3cm of snow accumilation btw.

musehead, i'm looking at the j2ski snow forecasts and they indicate a dry spell until sunday where 15cms of snow are expected. this will change for sure in the days to come but let's hope there is some snow in the weekend

Still some soft snow to be found in the 3V despite the doom & gloom reports..
Conditions on piste are great at the moment, but will deteriorate quickly with increased traffic!
East facing slopes above about 2400m still really soft with a wafer-thin crust on top - very pleasant to ski - but pick your slopes carefully as there are many rocks just waiting for the unwary...

It's currently snowing in the Three Valleys and has been all day, it's not particularly heavy snow, but it's snow all the same! Think it's been heavier over the Courchevel and Meribel side than Les Menuires and Val Thorens

Just had a week skiing the three valleys. Snow was good higher up, especially in Val Thorens. Below 1800m in Meribel things were icey and snow cannons were in use a lot. Snow started falling on friday and was still coming down as I left today.

Conditions above about 2400m in Meribel and Corchevel valleys today was fantastic. Velvety on piste, light, fluffy and about a foot deep off-piste..... and it's snowing again now down at 600m

A few inches of fresh snow today, overall conditions are excellent. Courchevel couloirs are roped off at the moment, but we skied the Panoramic today (underneath the restaurant) and it had thigh-deep powder Very Happy

offpisteskiing, I must have just missed you! Hopefully catch up later in the season.

Last night's snow seemed to have turned to light rain on lower slopes, conditions were just a tad heavier today, but still very good. Courchevel was extremely quiet

Lots of new snow last night, but very heavy with the foehn/lombarde blowing... Avvy risk high at the moment, all the East/North facing slopes were going with the PIDA this morning so be careful out there folks...

Mucho soft heaviness yesterday, peeing it down up in 1650 (4degs @ 10pm) last night, soft fresh up there today but windy again... Temperatures due to drop rapidly through today/tonight so will be interesting to see what that gives us..!
Couple of rapido snow pits yesterday gave an easy collapse of the top 30cms on the now-buried ex surface hoar layer and this will most likely still be hanging about anywhere that hasn't been controlled/slid already so even with new soft snow on top alot of care will be needed in the back country for a while..
The wind with this weather has been helping to fill in some of the big holes between boulders etc. Skied Sous le Tele and Emile Allais off the Saulire last week and they were no rockier than they ever are...

A mixed bag today. Glorious sunshine to start the day, not a cloud in the sky, but many runs quite 'scratchy' and the off-piste a little heavy. Started to cloud over during the afternoon temperature is dropping, and is now snowing down to about 800m. Some good snow on some pistes, others are disappointing.

Went for a quick tour today to have a look at conditions.. nice day to be out until mid-afternoon when it clouded over - now snowing gently in Bozel.

Off-piste needs much caution - some good sliding layers down low, and a good bit of snow on top which will move with the right trigger - ~40cm deep slab releasing on buried surface hoar layer:

Not the super-easy collapse of 3 days ago when I dug a pit with some clients and the buried hoar layer collapsed in an isolated block with the slightest of downward pressures, but easy enough to move that you wouldn't necessarily want to be jumping about on steep north-ish slopes at the moment...

Some good powder to be had on the sunny sides though, with a 20cm layer of fluff over a supportive crust. All very pleasant:

More snow due in the next few days + temps due to go up (& down) again, so conditions likely to change alot this week!!!

About 5cm fresh overnight and reasonably clear thismorning. Lovely day skiing the upper slopes in sun yesterday, but below 2000m hard, occasionallly rocky and some ice. La Masse below mid station wasn't nice.

offpisteskiing, out of interest ref the hoar layer, are you skiing sunny facing slopes as the sun would have melted/bonded that hoar layer due to the extra warmth and secondly on the north facing slopes will that hoar layer be there all year, or will it 'improve' with time?

Nice pics Smile

Cheers,

greg
