Was up CairnGorm on the 14th, nice spring conditions. Don't forget the Scottish season usually peaks in mid-spring, so expecting those big March snowfalls anytime now Got a nice base for them to land on too!

firstracks, Looks excellent! Ican't see why some peeps feel the need to diss scottish skiing - OK - there are no snow making machines - but the real stuff looking very good for this time of the year IMO.
scotland give up ,france is not that far and probably cheaper definitely friendlier, and theirs real snow.
I can be on the snow in less than the check in time at the airport, so go figure. Can I decide it's a nice day, I can do a few hours work in the morning, put the afternoon stuff back till evening and go and slide for a few hours in France? Nope. Can you, doubt it.
Ignorance from someone who simply can't grasp the fundamental difference between snowsports and a snowsports holiday. The needs and requirements of locals and day trippers is very different from those of someone going on a holiday - but as most of the skiers in the UK only connect skiing with holidays it maybe isn't surprising.
Skiing isn't something I do once or twice a year for a week. Its something I do at least once or twice every week and often more for a period spanning five months of the year. Even last year the Season spanned six months with skiing in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, March and April.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I have had some of the most amazing ski-ing of my life in Scotland. It mightn't be the Alps or the Rockies in terms of size or whatever, but it has its own unique character. I've skied in October through to May in Scotland, enjoyed fabulous fresh snow, amazing off piste, fab spring conditions. I wouldn't have missed any of these days for the world. And there will continue to be days like this for me in the future.
To pick up on easiski's comment about employment and the tourist industry, she is totally right.
pjheystacky, I think your comment is really lacking in a true understanding of Scottish ski-ing and a tad off really.
Oh, and by the way, I work in the Scottish ski industry.
Winterhighland, I think you've hit the nail on the head. Too many skiers are now looking for 'designer snow' and are unhappy with anything else. However many of us are happy with any snow, and the photos seem to me to be of a normal skiing season in scotland - plenty of snow in the gullies by the look of it.
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

Agree with the rest of you. Winterhighland makes a good point - skiing here is a part of our lives, and not something we do for one week a year then call ourselves 'skiers'. I ski every month between November and May (in 2007 we hiked for turns in August!), and I had an absolute blast on every single one of those days. Really don't understand where people get their kicks in constantly putting down Scotland. Many people I've met here in Edinburgh laugh when I mention Scottish skiing. When asked if they've ever tried it, the answer is inevitably almost always "no, and I don't plan to". So how then, would they know how 'bad' it is?
Ironically, it's a result of public perception of 'no snow' and consequently less customers, rather than actual no snow - CairnGorm, Glencoe, Nevis etc always have to close snowsports early as a result of lack of customers. If only people would realise conditions are best in March etc, rather than early January, then so much of the decline could be halted. Even in global warming's "worst case scenario" the ski areas could be incapable of operating by 2080! The fact we're seeing people believe this is happening 'now' is just ridiculous...
It's a sinking ship, and purely thanks to the media. The damage is already done, and all the major news sources are only too keen to be out peddling the "no snow" and "global warming" messages.
Now more than ever, people need to get out and show support.
After all it is free

Under the UKCIP worst case warming scenario for Highland Scotland, winter 2007 would still have been a milder than average winter in the 2080s. If skiing in Scotland ends in the life time of any users of snowheads, it wont be due to climate, it might very well be due to climate perception.

Skied scotland for 14 years now on Cairngorm mountain. Only ever had three bad days when the gorms been shut, so hopped over to the Lecht. Scotland is a good place to go to, and living in the midlands, is easy to get too.
Had some bloody good times on the Corrie Cas tryin to stay upright on the Gun Barrel, or Spankin the White Lady's ass!
I use SKINORWEST as they do bus holidays for the weekends, and self drive packages too. They have their own ski hire and instructors and are really good and caring! Good value.
reports on winterhighland that Braveheart now has chairs on it, and plenty of snow in Corrie Dubh

Was up at Glencoe on Sunday and had a great day. Not many runs open and the snow was a bit hard first thing but once it had softened up a bit it was great. We mainly just lapped the main basin and as there was no real queues got a lot of skiing in. There is still loads of snow in the main basin and you could ski down under the cliffhanger chair and lap that or alongside the plateau poma, all runs were in nice condition apart from the very end of the plateau poma which was completely broken so you had to take your skis off and walk but we only skied this when we were going back down to the car park so not a problem. Hopefully there should be some more fresh snow soon and I think this will top up the base nicely.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Made two trips to Glencoe in the last week and there's stacks of snow in all the right places and not a moment to wait for a ski lift. Don't knock it, get your @rse up there and see for yourself.
Main basin to cliffy cafe yesterday, sorry about the wobble, handheld camera .
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

My arm is still giving me jip (stopped me skiing at the weekend) I now can't get a day off work until Friday and it looks like the weather is going to break before then
You know it makes sense.

Glencoe and Nevis have caught 6-8 inches the last wee while according to Winterhighland. Looks like a fab day to be ski-ing.
So wish I was there.

Well, I've been away for a wee bit (skiing strangely enough!) so haven't kept up with this thread but totally agree with all the comments in reply to pjheystacky. I too haven't a clue why some people seem to think it clever to diss Scottish skiing - frankly it's not and is, more often than not, prejudice based on ignorance. I also have to say that Winerhighland get's it totally right IMHO when he points out the difference between snowsports and a snowsports holiday - that's the crucial difference I think and what makes skiing in Scotland a fundamantally different thing for those who are involved in it.
Anyway, conditions are looking good this week, have been noticing Glencoe has kept a hold of a heck of a base and with the new snow is looking really good!

Just looking at the Glencoe and Nevis threads on Winterhighland and powder conditions are being reported today, one person up there today saying "have just ridden some of the lightest powder I've ever experienced in Scotland"
Sounds superb, I'm wondering what the chances of similar for the weekend are... I'm getting 'slightly' itchy feet!

I was - first ever visit to Glencoe and it was amazingly good. First ever slide down the (powdery) Spring Run. Some of my photos are also on the WinterHighland Glencoe thread.

II, if its any consolation I've done the back corries with even more snow than that albeit in substantially poorer visibility.
Hrrrrrmmmm. I'm so jealous reading all this. I had a look at the websites today for snow reports, and everywhere seems to have closed their lifts due to high winds. are things really that bad? Will the wind stop anytime soon???? Can I manage a wee trip up north somewhere this weekend????????????
Sheepmadang, the hills look to get dumped on over the next few days. There'll be a break from the storms mid-week next-week, just keep your options open and be ready to go as soon as.
We're going to take a look at glencoe on sunday as we'll be in the area. Webcams still show good coverage.

Do you have a link to this forecast? I was hoping to head North next week but at the moment it's gales through to and including Monday. Thought I would do a 3 day excursion - a day each on Cairngorm, Nevis Range and Glencoe

kristof - I'm keeping my Friday/Saturday options open too.
ccl - yesterday, there looked to be a 36 hour window Tuesday into Wednesday with a ridge between storms. Now there's yet another storm modelled to be blowing through on Wednesday so kristof's suggested Friday 14th is looking like the earliest calm. Oddly, the storm which looks to track across the UK on Monday might leave the Highlands in a quiet zone but I wouldn't count on it.
... For Glencoe there's going to be plenty more fresh at the end of it all across the skiing vertical and the modelled outlook for 16 days ahead have rarely looked as encouraging. If I can't get a slide in next week for storms, I'll not panic as I'm getting more excited about the prospect of keeping enough snow for the lifts to operate right through to the end of April.
Purely for an indication of wind speeds, I look at this site which updates more quickly and regularly than snow-forecast or metcheck etc and clicking on Dalmally will give you a reasonable indication for Glencoe.
moffatross, I must be destined to be there next week, I've just been asked to go to a meeting in Edinburgh on Thursday, guess I'll be driving, taking my stuff and taking Friday off
