Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

andyph, well no, not really, may yes! But we are not skiing now this week as lifts not open here or in Avoriaz - I will wait on here to find out any up to date info on that but appears so - we will put on the snow shoes at some point for a bit of exercise and fresh air.

General question to anyone out there, what are the roads coming in from Geneva,is it tricky getting around the resort etc, first timer in the pds so everything is new to me

tman80, We are in Les Gets, but I don't know where you are going. Plenty of snow around here and the roads are being cleared but depending on where you are going if you don't have winter tyres then you may need chains just depending on where you are going. There are quite a few French cars, local, driving around with chains on at the moment.

Tman80, I've just arrived at the tunnel after an early start from Chatel (06.50)

I would say the village roads would have been impassable on summer tyres today. 5cm of fresh snow and -4C made it slippery. I was loosing traction over the Pas de Morgins with winter tyres.

Snow on the road all the way down to Lake Geneva level.

The section from Valorbe to Besancon was also tricky.

I have to say the roads are usually cleared quickly but they don't grit or salt them so if it is very cold or snowing hard you would have trouble on summer tyres.

Where are you travelling from and when?

P.s. Mrs DJL has been left behind in Chatel and reports that it was snowing heavily this afternoon.

tman80, If you are being collected from Geneva I doubt you would be delayed too much unless it is snowing very heavily and is a peak Saturday (though you are probably early enough to miss the worst of the traffic).

I've never walked Montriond to Morzine but village to village isn't too far - wouldn't want to walk from the lake to Morzine though.

tman80, don't worry about transfers - it's their problem. They know how to deal with snow and unless it's carnage on the roads then you'll be picked up on time. I think the most that even heavy snow has affected a journey to the airport is about 30 minutes.

The Brown Bear lodge is about a two minute walk from a bus that runs between Morzine and Ardent. Most chalets run clients to skiing in the mornings, but just in case...

You have three alternatives for skiing:
- bus to Ardent (10 minutes) - gives you access to a fast gondola that then gives you access to the Linderat bowl - from you which have direct access to Chatel (left); Switzerland (sort of straight on) and Avoriaz (right)
- bus to Morzine and get off at the footbridge over the valley (about a 5-10 minute bus ride), which gets you on to the Super Morzine lift and up into Avoriaz an alternative route
- bus all the way into Morzine (about a 10-15 minute bus ride) and get off at the last stop, which is Pleney - giving you access to all the Morzine and Les Gets skiing.

An alternative to get to Les Gets is to go to Ardent; go up the first chair on the right; cut through the snow park and over to Super Morzine; take the Super Morzine bubble down; take the petit train (or 5-10 minute) walk across Morzine and then up Pleney. From Ardent I could probably get over to Les Gets in 30 minutes.

Ardent is generally the local's choice wink

Morzine is a 15-20 minute walk from Montriond - maybe more if it's snowy on the pavements. It's further than I'd want to walk with ski equipment.

There is a hotel and a Tabac in Mondtriond, both of which are good for a quiet apres beer. There are also a couple of bars at Ardent where you can have a beer whilst waiting for a bus home.

The ski buses run until around 19:00 - so you can always get a bus into town, even if you walk back.

Alternatively, you can finish your day by skiing down to:
- the bottom of Prodains - take the ski bus into Morzine; have a beer and then bus back to Montriond
- Super Morzine - either walk over the foot bridge and get the bus home - or have a beer in town and get the bus from either Pleney or the footbridge - depending on where you end up.

Taxis are hideously expensive. Just don't. You'll feel violated.

tman80, I'm not very good at recommending places to eat in Avoriaz itself as I inevitably end up in Changabang (opposite the top of the (old) Prodains cable car and next to the ESF office) - good value burgers, etc served by friendly people.

under a new name is (one of our) resident restaurant critics and DJL will be able to comment on the Chatel side...

Over the last few years restaurant quality in the area, and Les Gets in particular, seems to have gone up.

La Grande Ourse on Mont Chery is worth the trip - although they are renowned for their slow service. Make sure you book and get an early table. It'll involve skiing over to Les Gets; skiing down into Les Gets itself; crossing town and going up. Worth it on a sunny day as smashing views and good food. (Shame about the endemically crap service, but I'd prefer that to crap food.)

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
tman80, there are various restaurants in Lindarets/goat village - everyone has their own particular favourite - we tend to go to the Ferme which is no better than anywhere else but we like it, the Terrasse there is good and also one called something like Cremallerie which our neighbours like a lot.
Near the old Prodains cable car top you have the Trappeur and Chez Flo; we also go to the hotel Prodains if we ski down that way. Not sure if you have said when you are going to be in Montriond but at busy times of year its best to book.
If you are in Les Gets then La Paika which is on the run down to La Turche is good - we can't afford to go there very often!

Just back from Morzine - pavements there absolutely lethal so everyone walking in the roads. Sun coming out and snow stopped for a bit.

tman80, I can't think of anywhere in particular to avoid. General quailty of food is high on the French side. Value for money and YMMV.

Lindarets (Goat village) has two of our favourites, La Terrasse (although do not let the prop persuade you to try his Corsican rosé - it's lovely but not at all cheap) and La Cremaillère.

Had lunch in Les Barmettes (Lindarets plateau) for the first time on Sunday and for a snack bar the food was generally well received. Burger had very good chillied onion relish.

Morzine, Coup de Couer is nice for apres ski or lunch. The burger bar opposite Francois Baud's (just down from Pleney lift) is rather good for stand up burgers.

In Linga (Chatel) la Tane o'Marmotte has a more eclectic menu.

Les Gets side, La Paika is very good but again you probably want to book. Can get very busy.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
"La Perdrix Blanche" at Pre La Joux and "Restaurant Self Plaine Dranse" at Plaine Dranse are both large and turn out big portions of good filling stuff at "prixs corrects". Gourmet they're not! We like "Chez Denis" at Plaine Dranse though it is fairly small and quite French with cheese specialities featuring home made cheese. And there is always "Le Vieux Chalet" (Chez Babeth) which is an experience! Lots of others at Plain Dranse.

There is a really nice little spot called "La Leche" just below the gondola arrival in Linga (pass the first restaurant and go to the right of the blue piste across the drag lift to access).

One of my favourite stops is at Les Brocheaux (bottom of the French Mosettes) half way down the Lindarets valley where there are a couple of restaurants of which I prefer "L'Abricotine".

Superb sunny terrace for a coffee stop just above the La Ripaille double drag lifts in Les Crosets. Can't remember the name but it is a frequent stop if we are doing the circuit. It is in Switzerland however which bumps the price a bit. We never seem to stop anywhere in Champoussin, Les Crosets or Champery so can't help on that front.

If you get to the Super Chatel area "Restaurant Portes du Soleil" is good - ski down from the gondola arrival towards the three drag lift departures. Avoid the big restaurant in the gondola arrival building. Also avoid "Chalet Neuf" half way up the double drag lift of the same name unless you plan to take out a second mortgage.

If you find yourself in Chatel village at lunchtime Le Vieux Four (50 yards down the road from the gondola departure) has a really good fixed price menu. 3 courses for Euro 14.50. Mrs DJL is in Chatel at the moment and had lunch there whilst I was skiing on Saturday. The apartment kitchen was ripped out this morning so I have an idea they will be getting some of her custom this week!

Chez Nannon by the top of the Troncs chair on the Nyon plateau is very good. Fantastic grilled meats and Reblochon Aux Patates. Book a table inside. I've never eaten at La Paika but people do say that it is good. The group of restaurants and snack-bars at the bottom of the Charniaz Express always seem to do good-value nosh. I've always found the restaurants in the PdS to be of a very high standard

And there are plenty of them so most of the time if you don't like somewhere or can't get in then there is somewhere else around the corner. We really notice it if /when we ski in other areas. Generally something for all pockets.

tman80, +1 for Chez Nannon. We also like the Rossetaz, near the top of the Rosta chairlift in Les Gets, which does excellent pizzas. Don't be put off by the crowds - it's all cooked to order and is surprisingly quick (in a nice way). La Paika is lovely but not cheap. It's on the right of the Vorosses run as you ski down to La Turche - if you're going there, keep a look out as it's very easy to ski past!

Lenny Law, I think you mean "Patates aux Reblochon"... although it's hard to know what is the dominating flavour. Tartiflette to anyone else. Beware of the pigs' ears in the soup. They are supposed to stay in the soup pot, not arrive in your bowl.

And very good, although I seem to recall that the original "Nannon" is no longer prop.?

Been a long while since I was there (in winter), and most of the places I'd eat at have been mentioned already (Nannon, Rossetaz,..). I don''t remember the names of the others, so someone more local might be able to guess and fill them in... (I'll take a look at a map later)
Restaurant at Champery Planachaux - had a big round fire/oven inside
Restaurant at very bottom of Chatel Linga (usually just a coffee stop there - Might be "Le Schuss"?)
Restaurant on the right heading down towards Morgins from Chatel (must be near top of chairlift)

Also used to ski over from Les Gets to Champoussin - Chez Gaby (think it has 2 names?), was OK, but seemed pricey as heck when I was there in July.

Quick question, I'm out in Chatel with the missus and family for Christmas and we'll be tag wrestling skiing with childcare, i.e. one does one, while the other does the other.

Are Chatel or PdS 6 day passes transferable (i.e. they're just a magnetic hands free card in your pocket) or do they carry a photo ID?

Thanks in advance.

snoozeboy, I suspect that the conditions say they are not transferable but there is no photo so you would get away with one pass between the two of you and a lunchtime changeover. You cold even do a change over at somewhere like Plaine Dranse or Super Chatel if you both wanted to be up the mountain as you can get pedestrian tickets.

We're out at Christmas as well. Might manage that beer (or a ski) this time!
