Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

snowball, I understand that some questions are hard to answer, but the questionnaire is made for the whole population so obviously with only 2 fore choice answers there is no way an answer will fit everyone, that why you just need to answer to which you feel fits you best. Im sorry but you are forced to answer all questions as each answer has a value to your overall sensation seeking score.

I already stated that I quite understand that it is necessary to give the answer that is slightly nearer to one's own attitude, rather than expecting an exact fit. However, as I said, some pairs do not have an answer which is meaningful in relation to me, so I can answer your questionnaire in ways which would give me very different scores but would be equally "true".
Consequently I either take it as a bit of a giggle but nothing to do with truth, or I don't do the questionnaire.
I'm a bit short of time today.

Damn, that sounds a bit pompous - Oh well.

snowball, Im sorry that you really feel you cant answer the questionnaire with any truth at all, so as much as i need the numbers lol I would rather have more valid results that just for a giggle.

Thank you anyway for your time.

Nowely, I recall a similar survey a while ago, much discussed on here. the kind of "risks" being examined seem to fall into two distinct categories. One is physical (do you want to ski fast, be a mountain climber) the other social (going on a trip not pre-planned, meeting people different from yourself etc). As I get older I get more physically risk averse (in that injuries come easier and go harder) but socially less risk averse. I have a huge amount of experience of travel now, much of it alone (for work) so all that phases me much less than it would have when I was 20.

How will your analysis allow for age (and gender)?

anarchicsaltire, ah I see now Toofy Grin oh dear oh dear!

36/40 for sensation seeking, 9/10 boredom susceptibility, 8/10 disinhibition, 9/10 experience seeking, 10/10 adventure seeking.

is there a clinic for me to check into? Prefereably one that I have to parachute and manhaul a 100kg sled over hunderds of miles of antarctic wilderness to get too?

pam w, Well the survey can be broken down into 4 subscales experience seeking, disinhibition, thrill and adventure seeking and boredom susceptibility. So not only will the final sensation seeking score be analysed but so will each subsection to see differences between the ages and genders. So where you may not score highly in one section you may in another and this can be compared to other people in your age category or compared against other age categories. That is why i added the age and gender questions to the survey as it adds much more depth to the analytical possibilities.

fatbob, The link to skiing and snowboarding is that thats who im doing the study on?? the questionnaire was not made for skiers or snowboarders like i have said numerous times the questionnaire is made to measure sensation seeking. so thats what im doing im measuring sensation seeking scores of snowboarders and skiers.

Nowely, i think what fatbob is trying to say is that you don't cater for people who do both sports, with or without having a preference for either sport.

therefore anyone who did both sports and wanted to answer the questions truthfully would have to answer the questionnaire twice cos the questions don't allow for both answers to be chosen if appropriate regarding the "which sport do you participate in?" question.

and that probably applies to both answers on a lot of the questions, which is why you're getting a hard time. i.o.w., real life isn't as black and white as your choice of answers is implying.

Not particulary sure there is much value in a self selecting survey. Your thesis might just as well ask the question, "is anybody high on the sensation seeking scale likely to be arsed to fill this in?"

So if I've got the gist of this thread you thought up a clumsy hypothesis based on some idea that skiing and/or snowboarding must be exxxtreeeme sports then nicked some questions from somewhere else and then pimped your questionnaire on tinterweb where a bunch of saddos such as myself have tried and failed to complete it properly. Good luck with any meaningful results.

cathy, maybe it's cos their results were flawed (as some snowHead may have pointed out at the time of the survey) and there was no point in coming back to say "yes, you were right, my results were flawed"...

An appalling constructed piece of ordure, the result couldn't reflect me or anyone of you I know. I participate in and have done many of the option but a number of the questions are offensive and all don't allow for any level of ambiguity. The result couldn't be representative of anyone or anything. This is from someone working in an industry that has a morbidity rate second only to infantryman. rolling eyes

Nowely, you're coming across as someone who isn't really listening to good advice being given to you by many people. you may want to stop being so defensive and read through these responses again in a couple of weeks when your perspective has changed (cos you're not concentrating on this survey and all that's surrounding it.)

again, just a suggestion, and some friendly advice wink.

If you really want meaningful answers rather than meaningless research which you can put into to satisfy a tick-in-the-box for a ho-hum degree, I would heed snowball's comment - not only does what he say align with my attempt to answer the questionnaire, he is also one of the most experienced skiers on this forum, who skis to a very high standard indeed. If he had to give up, it is unlikely that any of the results of your survey will be valid.

The survey isn't related to the skill level of the participant though it is for every skiers and snowboarders and is there to measure their personality trait of sensation seeking.

It only measures if you haven't succeeded in peeing them off so badly upfront that they just make up answers or abandon the questionnaire - are you tracking levels of non-completion - might be statistically significant too.

As above - survey tells us that 100% of people who complete a survey have completed the survey. Anything else is potentially invalid because of your poor methodology but as long as you've ticked the box that's ok isn't it?
