Poster: A snowHead
|
I'm a relatively new skiier, and want to work on my technique as much as possible this summer, in preparation for the season next year when I hope (wife permitting!) to get as many trips in as possible including a snowheads one.
What are my best options? I live in the flattest place on earth (Cambridge), about 1-2 hours drive away from a range of indoor snow domes: Hemel, MK and at a push Leeds. I know they're not going to be as good as the real thing, but its going to be the best I can manage over the course of this year, so I'll make do and hopefully there will be some good schools at these places. Would anyone recommend any of these? Any steer clear stories?
Or am I really just best saving my money?
TIA.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I contacted them but didn't receive a reply - will do so again if they're recommended.
How does it work exactly, do I need membership to the ski slope in Hemel? Presumably that brings the cost down if I start going regularly.

macgyver, very sorry that you didn't get a reply when you contacted us. This might have been when we were away in the Alps as it was a very hectic winter for us. We run coaching clinics at three different levels, for all grades of skier except for beginners. You can see more details on our website. The coaching fee includes everything you need: slope time, equipment hire if required, coaching and video feedback. You don't need to be a member of the Snow Centre's membership scheme to join in with our coaching arrangements.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

macgyver, not one but two marathons! Good luck with those (and your recovery ). We run our clinics every month, so hopefully you'll find dates which are convenient. Now that the winter season is over the slope at Hemel is much quieter and the snow in better condition, so it's a great time to develop your ski skills.

Quick question if I may Rob, though I realise email might be better, I have only been skiing three times, but on your chart from the descriptions I'd be a level 7. However given that I lack experience would I be pissing other people off and be more suited to one of your confidence clinics? The one I was considering is the 'Carving your turns' on the 11th of May.

macgyver, In general we can cope with a fairly wide range of ability in any one group, mainly because everyone is working on the same slope and can lap around working at their own pace. If anyone is struggling with some of the drills and exercises we set up then we can make them a bit easier (equally, if anyone is doing them well we will make them more challenging), so there isn't any concerns about holding other people in the group back.
The Building Confidence clinics are designed to ensure that the fundamental skills (how you steer your skis, the movements you make, the timing of those movements) are just about in place, and can provide the foundation for improvement. Absolutely no reason why this can't be the case with three weeks of skiing. The Skills Clinics are designed to take these fundamental skills and improve them to make you a more versatile skier who can cope with an increasingly wide range of terrain and conditions. The level above that, our Performance Clinics, will then build on that versatility by developing in more detail individual aspects of your skiing broadly to raise your performance levels. We tend not to think about progression through these levels in terms of weeks skied or terrain that you can manage, but skills acquired. That's why we wrote our ability levels in the way which we did, with particular reference to ski skills at each level. Those parts of the level descriptions are the most important bit, with references to the steepness of terrain to provide an understandable context for those skills.
