Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Damaged skis on flight

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi everyone,

Just got back from using my £7 Kathmandu bag for the first time and I haven't had a good experience! When I received my bag back, there were about 7 or 8 holes in the bag where it has clearly been dragged along and worn holes in the bag. There was also a split along the side of the bag, about 35cm in length. I complained to BA at heathrow this evening, thinking it was just the ski bag needing replacing.

However once I got home, I have noticed that the tail of one of the skis has been worn away at an angle and the binding on the other ski has also clearly been dragged along and has worn away a lot of the plastic on the heel part of the binding.

Is BA liable for repairing these damages and reimbursing me? I will no doubt need a new binding, and to be honest and am not happy now that one of my skis is notably damaged, even if it is just aesthetic. Or is it down to me to claim on my insurance and pay the excess?

smithy05, it is not BAs responsibility at all, it is the baggage handling company. Suggest you call them in the morning and ask - when you say you complained, have you actually put in a claim for the damaged bag? if not it's probably too late and you can try your insurance. If you did make a claim they might extend it to the skis as well, but really you should check contents at the desk.

I put in a complaint at the desk and got given a case number. The guy at the desk said to check the contents when home and then to ring in the morning if anything was damaged, so hoping they will cover the skis also.

The damaged items. BA say I need a retailer to prove they are damaged! Is it not obvious?!

Possibly partially fell off the baggage cart and was dragged across the tarmac?

I had a similar thing happen a few years back on a BA flight - although no where near as bad. Registered the damage at the airport and then followed up with a phone call to BA. They told me the same thing. I called snow and rock and explained the situation and they emailed me a letter saying that my bag was beyond repair and that a new one would cost X amount (they did this without even asking to see it). Fowarded this to BA and they contacted me to say buy a new bag to the value of what my old one was worth. I did this and was refunded by them. It was very easy and all done in about 3 weeks.

I reckon your bag fell off the wagon and was dragged along the tarmac or something like that. Thats a lot of damage. I have the same ski bag but the double version and mine has held up fine for several trips so far. It must have punished!

Good luck!

I would guess any retailer will be happy to offer such "proof", especially if you suggest you will be buying your replacement there. Toofy Grin

Generally get replacement generic bag or 50% of cost. Contents damage including complete destruction, I have never got anything in three similar problems this year of my gear being thrown off aircraft onto tarmac so I wouldn't get your hopes up. Golden rule if your luggage is delayed coming off into the terminal or there is a long gap between other bags and yours check like a hawk including contents whilst you are at the airport.

Cynic,I have had a replacement ski bag and boot bag, both better quality and more expensive than the damaged ones. They must have had a deal going with Dakine

The guy at BA seemed pretty confident that they would cover the cost of the skis. However I can see them saying though that the damage to the tail of the ski doesn't warrant a replacement - it wont affect performance I know but it matters to me as I take good care of them. I can see them just replacing the binding and me having to put up with the damage.

 You know it makes sense.

Always take photos of the damage if you can. But be warned they do get arsey about it, you being in a restricted area an all. Even though their agent is allowed to take photos. Just ensure that if this happens you get them to take the shots that you want as well AND ensure they email you the same...... Ours didn't but I got my shots before they had realised, on my iPhone, which is an easy subtle way of doing it, as you don't need a direct line of sight to view your screen before taking the shot wink

There are a very few areas in an airport that are restricted by law for photography - passport control and the immediate vicinity of the hand baggage check area - don't fall for a thinly disguised commercial ruse.

Suck up the damage to the tail of the ski unless its a delam - they're tools not jewels. Get them to cough for a bag and replacement heel piece fitted as that's safety critical.

Alos Rule 5 and whatever the other rule is re equipment damage.

The Baggage reclaim is adjacent to the Complaints/Missing Bags counter, so guess that could still probably be in the restricted area....... at LHR at least, other airports may differ though. Reason being that you have not cleared customs yet.

On the rocks, nothing protects from 6 metre drops onto tarmac they just explode, I had thick glass bottles busted inside big armored samsonite even though inside a pair of $400 shoes which were bugg#red, didn't want to know because I didn't realise until I got home. Fortunately I am had another damaged suitcase I had claimed on with another airline who had left the wreckage with me and they took it away and repaired it.

I appreciate that your skis have been dragged along the ground, but £ 7 for a ski bag? From Kathmandu? I bet that you paid a few hundred for your skis, so why not wrap them in bubble wrap and tape. It`s like folks not locking up their £ 400 skis, and finding them gone; protect your investment. Good luck with your claim.

Whether the skis were in my Kathmandu bag, or my heavily padded other ski bag would have made little difference. It hat burnt through the strap, nylon outer and also inner binding padding. It has been dragged along the tarmac at speed, £7 bag or £70 bag, the outcome would be the same.

Unbelievable service. Ordered brand new skis this afternoon and the money for a new bag and skis is being transferred in this afternoon. Tbh the damage to the skis isnt even that bad - getting the bindings checked by local shop to make sure they are ok - then I have two sets of fully working skis!
