Now I am sure, but I am getting old so can't rely on memory, but iam sure that there always used to be piste patrollers out and around the pistes, certainly the major areas.
In St Anton in Jan, and 3Vs last week, I didn't see a single one the whole time. There were a couple or more occasions on both trips when we could have done with one - making sure someone had arranged for getting an injury off the slope, and to address a few potentially dangerous skiers /boarders
All I could see was the Lifties
Do they exist any more, do they patrol any more ? Is my eyesight just deteriorating and can't see them?

You see them in Scotland, partly because many ski patrollers actually enjoy skiing!
Sometimes they're in a hut/shed, having a cup of tea. Of course, it's for the ski community to decide to what extent they should police the slopes (probably not a fun role of the job), pulling liftpasses etc.
The only time I've ever been shouted at by a ski patroller was at Beaver Creek, Colorado, about 20 years ago. The patroller yelled "Too Fast" and it was very memorable. There were few people on the run, and we're always responsible for collision avoidance as per the FIS rules, but I respected his right to that opinion and slowed down a bit.
One of the key jobs of ski patrol is to open runs, in the early morning, and sweep them at the end of play. That's the side of their job we obviously don't see much of.

Theres a ski patrol hut at the top of the Flakenbahn in Kitzbuhel. You usually see them going round in skidoos.

I saw two just this morning. I was actually on snowshoes, beside the piste. There were a couple of guys straightening piste markers which had been knocked crooked, straightening some netting and generally tidying up. I particularly noticed them because, as ever, their style of skiing (without poles, as usual) was just so impressively effortless and "right".

stanton, yep we saw loads in both February and March in St Anton.

In Italian Dolomites it is quite common to see police patrols on the slopes.
