Paul Goldstein, multi-millionaire owner of Nevica and Killy skiwear, has quit his prestigious flat in Summit Lodge - London's highest apartment block - blaming repair problems and disputes with neighbours.
Things started to go wrong when Goldstein discovered damp in his flat, eventually solved with a £4000 replacement of windows, but not before renovations of the block had escalated to a total bill of £1.5 million.
This report from the Hampstead & Highgate Express.
Paul Goldstein founded Nevica in 1978, in the back room of his brother's house, around half a mile from where this crisis took place.
Has your Nevica or Killy skiwear kept you clear of damp, and issues with neighbours?

Yes, it most certainly has. My neighbours love my 'retro' Nevica skiwear, and it always keeps me dry in the shower.

Oh yes, I remember skiing with a brother in law with the dayglow Nevica all in one complete with a liitle whistle attached and the word NEVICA in bold letters around the waist at the back! It certainly used to make him 'damp' or maybe that was his ski-ing ability.

boredsurfin, So I guess you won't be wearing such an outfit this year on the slopes of Paradiski?!
I had a Nevica jacket once, in fact I had two and both were well known for their vivid colours. My group never lost me.

David@traxvax, Paul Goldstein and I used to have 'executive lunches' in McDonald's, Golders Green, in his formative years of Nevica. He's a highly entertaining character (who once gave himself an extremely unprintable nickname), who owns a lavish chalet in Val d'Isere (so I'm told - have never seen it, and haven't seen him for about 10 years). I first met Goldstein at the Daily Mail Ski Show in about 1976 when we both found ourselves working for the late Alpine Sports. People used to think we were brothers, which was highly unfortunate.
Paul Goldstein once drove me down to the huge Ispo sports trade fair in Munich in his Porsche. This involved a 'near-death experience' at 136 mph on a German autobahn at 4am due to the actions of another driver.
But I digress. I'm concerned that Paul Goldstein is now homeless, and will be making strenuous efforts to establish that this isn't the case.

Mouth, I would have been very jealous of you if that was about 15 years or so ago. I would have loved a Nevica jacket then! However, I did get a very bright (and I mean *BRIGHT*!!!) orange jacket in Turner Sports in Marlow about 8 years ago and my group loved that jacket and were most upset when it got retired. I was the human signpost so the people in front could look back and see where the rest of the group were and the stragglers had someone to follow. I did suggest passing it on to someone but for some reason no-one took me up on the offer. I can't think why.

Getting back to the guts of this story (see link in first posting) lots of surveyors seem to have been involved in finding out why Summit Lodge was deficient in Gore-tex.
Looking at this from another angle, what kind of dampcourse should a surveyor look for in a ski jacket?

David Goldsmith, Well I don't know much about this kind of thing but there's more than one kind of damp and doesn't a damp course only deal with rising damp? I'm not sure how much rising damp applies to ski jackets but perhaps you should include ski trousers in this discussion and, maybe, if there's anyone who still wears them, all-in-ones.
Rising damp - caused by ground moisture being absorbed into brick and masonry walls.
Horizontal penetrating damp - where rainwater seeps through defective brick walls or incomplete mortar joints. (common in the likes of Aviemore, Glencoe)
Condensation - caused by inadequate ventilation or large variations between the internal and external temperature or humidity. (probably need more venting)
Falling damp - resulting from defective roofing and plumbing equipment, such as leaking gutters, flashings or pipes. (Whistler January 2005)

I'll try and get Paul Goldstein to respond to the query personally. Haven't spoken to him for about 15 years, but I'm picking up the phone right now ....

My first ski clothes over 20 years ago were Nevica; canary yellow and fluorescent electric green that melted the snow and seared other skiers eyes ... I loved it and still have them, battered and cut from thousands of skimiles, but now I'm too fat to fit in them now and wear North Face ... God I loved those Nevicas

When I started reading this thread I was getting worried that Paul Goldstein was now homeless because I hadn't seen him in Val d'isere in the last couple of years.
It was a relief when it was pointed out that the original posting was 5 years old. He may have decided just to live in Val d'isere, who wouldn't given the choice.

I saw Nevica listed as a brand in Sportsdirect the other day - though there was nothing Nevica on sale. Might mean that Ashley has bought the name and is intending to use it in the same way he has used other reputed but faded brands (Karrimore, the obvious example). Might be a good thing as there is precious little ski stuff on the high street since C and A went.
Edit, just noticed the link above that has more info than my post.

Sportsdirect will just produce cheap and nasty crap and put a Nevica label on it, same as they have done with all the other brands they have acquired.
I got myself an E+O jacket recently, apparently Goldstein owned that too.
