We are heading to Courcheval 1850 at the end of January.
We were wondering whether anyone has any advice on the best ski school there and whether we should book up front or when we get there?
Additionally where should we get the boots and skis from to hire?

kosciosco, I' ll get mine in first. Ski Academy were fantastic for our large collection of buffoons & muppets. End of Jan shouldnt be too busy but I would always book in advance. Ask for Raphael, he was the business.

If you are certain that you are having lessons, I'd say book in advance. That way you will make sure you get the lessons at the right time of day for you. There are lots of choices of ski school for you in Courchevel: two that I've used quite a lot are New Generation and Supreme and I've been very happy with the quality of instruction with both schools.

kosciosco, If you book your equipment in advance you normally save a bit. Skiset, snowrental, Intersport, etc all have booking facilities on their websites. Saves a bit of time too when you get there.

kosciosco if you are going with a tour operator I would just book in advance. It saves alot of time and in some cases hassle. They are usually exactly the same if not cheaper in price. You could always check the prices of ski hire and passes on t'internet.

kosciosco, well, you've picked a good resort - lots of schools/hire shops to chose from. For lessons, I'd recommend New Generation (as rob@rar.org.uk suggested). NewGen will also recommend a ski & boot hire shop - namely http://www.freeride.fr/index.php#start. Freeride is already very well-thought of in Meribel, and they've just opened an outlet in Couchevel this season.
Who-ever you chose, you NEED to book in advance as soon as you know your dates. In addition to what everyone else has already mentioned: for lessons, although prices probably won't rise, they certainly won't get any cheaper the closer the date. For ski-hire prices WILL get more expensive the closer the date.
Re: booking lessons/equipment though a tour op - wouldn't recommend it. Unless, of course, you've checked with the TO and gotten an iron-clad guarantee from them that they will give you a discount?? Otherwise 99.99% of the time it's less hassle and cheaper to do it yourself online from the comfort of your own PC.
