Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tina Maze breaks the 2000 points record!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Tina Maze broke the 2000 points in one season record set by Hermann Maier today when she won the Downhill race from Garmisch.

She has done this by being in the top 10 for just about every race and has achieved podiums in every discipline. She really is without a shadow of a doubt, the best female skier in the World Cup.

I bet Vonn is spitting bricks now! Laughing

Samerberg Sue, Agree when Maze won in Solden it was all over and Vonn knew it.

Looks like another USA racer maybe in trouble also with Alice Mckennis being helicoptered off, commentator said he was concerned about a possible head injury but looked more knee related to me?

Not "just" podium.... if I'm right, she actually won (at least one) race in every single discipline this season, except for city event. She won 4 or so GS races, she won at least one SL, she won both combined races, she won SG in St. Anton, and until today, downhill was only victory missing in this season.
And with current situation, it can happen pretty easy, she will take home every single WC globe this year... 1 point back in DH, 35 or so points back in SL, GS and SC (even if they don't give it for SC anymore) are secured already as well as overall, and for SG she's 65 points front with 2 races to go.

gatecrasher, she has a fracture of the tibial plateau if I have understood the local news correctly. They also suspect concussion as she had quite bad grazing on her face.

I did not see the actual fall as I was cleaning at the time but heard the commentators talking about it. There are two of the best Emergency & Accident Hospitals in Germany within a 5 minute flight time (Garmisch has one and there is the specialist clinic in Murnau). I hope she comes through this OK and is quickly dealt with.

Apparently "driver error" rather than unsafe conditions. Shame as she was really nice yesterday talking about the fun she was having, signing autographs and joking around with the ski fans waiting for the racers when they were released by the scrutineers. She's young and should heal quickly ready for next season. I doubt if she was going to race again this season any way as I'm not sure she would have qualified for the Lenzerheide Finals (only the top 25 in each discipline are invited). I think she has only had the one win which was a bit out of the blue.

Samerberg Sue, from memory she got caught out on a little bump on the turn and landed back on the tail of one ski, one of the later girls who had the green light got caught out at the same point but rode it out and ran wide.

Tbh, Alice looked to be skiing very cautiously/passively today prior to the crash.

briand6868, Me too but the track this weekend does not include the place where Uli had her accident!

Tarquin, selber Schuld! wink

The title was clear enough, for example she only has to come in 29th and she has enough points to win the SG Crystal Globe. There is a chance that she may actually take all of them, which will not be appreciated by a certain incapacitated American Very Happy

Are you sure about this? I admit I rather go xc skiing on one of very very few weekends where I didn't have to be on race, so I didn't see anything from this race, but from this what I saw on news, I would assume, they were going old men course (or current women course), which means they needed to go through FIS Schneise and not over Freier Fall. And Maier crashed into split time pole right in FIS Schneise.

Congratulations to Tina on breaking the 2000 point barrier! She has had a remarkable season. Does anyone know what Lindsey Vonn's reaction was to Tina getting 2000 points? Remember last season when Vonn was going for 2000 and came up 20 points short. My friends in the States say that there has been nor reaction from Vonn.

primoz, I was told by someone at the Kasse (one of the Garmisch Ski Club volunteers) that they have somehow altered the line so that it does not take the same line any more. I think the changes were made a long time back to be honest, after the results of the inquiry were in.

briand6868, It still is a sombre reminder as to what "could" go wrong though and I cannot ski that part of the Garmisch Classic Area without feeling more than a little bit sad for her daughter. Ulli Maier was one of my all-time favourites, second only to the greatest female skier of all time, Annemarie Moser-Pröll.

dudleyf, Hi and welcome to the mad house! If you hear of any reaction via your connections be sure to pass it on! I bet she is fuming and exploding with more violence that Mount St. Helens! Laughing
Great results all round today and yet again Maria Höfl-Riesch was super talking to all the kids along the Walk of Fame and posing with fans for photos. Certainly no snobby "ice lady" seen this weekend.

I was at the races in Garmisch this past weekend and saw Alice's fall. It looked very nasty. The poor girl just recovered from a tibial plateau fracture on one leg, and then she got one on the other. I hope that she is able to make a full recovery. I wonder if Alice will be making the rounds of the talk shows in the States to talk about how unsafe the conditions in Garmisch were on Saturday.

Samerberg Sue, yes Maria was very nice both on Friday and yesterday (didn't see her on Saturday). Even though she was disappointed with her performance on Friday, she took the time to chat with fans, hand out autograph cards, and sign autographs. She was very nice on Friday when I told her that I hoped she felt better soon (she was ill with a stomach virus on Thursday). She had smiles for the home fans despite her disappointment. On Sunday she was equally friendly.

It looks like Lindsey is going through with her legal action against Slovenia. Her father will be her lawyer. The Boston Blickbild has an exclusive interview with Lindsey's father. http://bostonblickbild.blogspot.de/2013/03/vonn-to-proceed-with-lawsuit-against.html

Shocked

Quote:

Tina Maze, a 29-year-old Slovenian skier who has clinched the World Cup overall women's title this season, shook off a death threat to finish fourth in the super-giant slalom race Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Maze, one of only six women to win World Cup events in all five Alpine disciplines, won the downhill event Saturday and then received an email threatening her life.

On Sunday, two bodyguards were by her side all day, Maze said she never felt threatened.

"I've had police in front my door all the time since yesterday," said Maze, a silver medalist in the super-G and giant slalom at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

“If somebody is strong and showing good performances and perfect in the thing you are doing, there are people who want to disturb you,” added Maze, who recently won the world championship in the super-G and claimed a world title in the giant slalom in 2011. “I guess it's part of the game but it didn't disturb me that much.

“It shouldn't be part of the game but life is not perfect. It's not nice for me, it's not nice for my team. They want to ruin your day, ruin the record, but I enjoyed the day 100%.”

Anna Fenninger of Austria won the super-G on Sunday by two-tenths of a second over Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch. Taking third was American Julia Mancuso, who will battle Maze for the World Cup super-G season title in two weeks at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

DB, I read about this in the German papers this morning which explains a lot! She was the only athlete who did not do the "Walk of Fame" along the bleachers on Friday Saturday or Sunday. On Friday we saw her being whisked away in a van with darkened windows surrounded by security. We jokingly said it is probably that Lindsey had sent out a hit squad, not realising that an actual death threat had beend received. She was OK on Thursday as a friend of mine was able to talk to her after the DH training run as well as get her photo, so the death threat must have come in either on Thursday evening or Friday. On the race course she seemd pretty focussed though and did well on Saturday, winning and breaking Maier's record. She was also racing well yesterday although she only got the tin medal position!

Maybe Red Bull and HEAD sent a Mafia enforcer to "convince" Tina to give all of her points and globes to Lindsey.
