Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

immigration canada question.......

 Poster: A snowHead

hi all

off to canada next week, flying to kelowna via calgary, just wondering what the immigration situation is?
we are assuming we check our baggage in at heathrow and don't see it again until kelowna, can anyone advise what happens with immigration? do we go through immigration at calgary and then pass through the airport somehow to get to our connection? or do we just do immigration when we get to kelowna? never had to do a flight connection before so excuse the ignorance, its all a bit knew!
thanks all

Not done the trip onwards to kelwona for a few years, but when we did we had to go through immigration and collect our luggage at Calgary and recheck it back in.

Remember watching a dog (in a crate) come through the luggage reclaim when we were waiting for our skis, it was a search and rescue dog and seemed quite chilled with his adventure Very Happy

You'll have to go through immigration at Calgary - it's standard practice to be vetted on arrival in a country. We changed in Edmonton en route to the States a few weeks ago and had to go through the full rigmarole of Canadian immigration including customs declarations, etc, even though we had no more than 90 minutes in the country.

You won't have a problem with the Canucks, though - they're a remarkably efficient, polite and friendly bunch who genuinely welcome visitors IME.

We were in Vancouver recently and there was a problem with baggage reclaim that meant it took a considerable time for it all to come through.
The number of transit bags off our flight that we saw repeatedly lapping the carousel indicated that quite a few people had managed to transfer to their flights without their bags.
Posidrive, Yes a friend whose son was going to Whistler on an instructor course was woken in the early hours by a customs official wanting all sorts of confirmations that his son would not be working before he would allow him in and even though he had a return ticket (admittedly for a date 4 weeks after the course ended) and had sufficient funds to support himself he was told to leave Canada 2 weeks before his return flight.

Yes.... Clear immigration in Calgary.... Proceed to baggage claim.... Pick up bag, hand customs form to officer on way out.... Immediately after customs are the connections desks for Canadian flights, re-check bags.... Go for a stroll around the airport and sample the joy that is Tim Hortons..... Very Happy

We flew to Calgary last year with Transat and then Air Canada to Kelowna. Ramzee is dead right you have to reclaim your luggage and go through customs, straight afer customs is Air Canada desk, check-in and luggage handling at Air Canada was easy. We did have a bit of stress though, the transat flight was quite a few hours delayed and although we had allowed about three hours between flights it was getting a bit tight. There was a very long queue for passport control and we asked if we could jump the queue and the kind man with a gun basically told us to back off and get in the queue. We made it through with about 5 minutes to spare. Happy days! The flight to Kelowna was interesting as well, bumpy ride is an understatement, I think it was a lot breezy out there, tin can in a washing machine springs to mind.

When you get off your flight, dont mess around..... head straight for Immigration, either it will be empty or you will be glad you beat most of the stragglers to he line!...there are toilets by baggage reclaim once you are through (bags tend to take a while at YYC!).... Immigration is the biggest bottleneck, after that plenty of time to take a look around Very Happy
