Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Waxing - Have I Done It Right?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi guys,

I'm off to Austria on Wednesday for a few days so ahead of that I have had a go at waxing my own skis. They are the first set I have owned and have been skiing at an indoor snow slope for 5 months once a week.

I followed a guide which basically said, clean, wax, scrape and polish which I have done. It's looking nice and shiny but there are some visible marks in the wax from scraping it off which I've tried to polish out to the best of my strength but there are still there.

Is this normal? It feels pretty smooth when running hand across it...

Thanks,

Tom

tom24, The snow will sort out any imperfections you may have left - don't worry about it.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You do want some texture in the wax surface, to channel the water that has formed from the snow compressed under the pressure of skiing.

By the end of the first run, it'll be right.

Top work,

Yep, as mentioned above, don't worry about it. I waxed my skis today and there are small lines of wax visible on the base where I have a few scratches; gone after a run.

Zero-G makes a good point about adding texture to the wax surface.

It will make no difference, at least no difference that a normal skier could notice. To smooth out these imperfections next time, use some wire wool pan scourer, followed by a normal textile pan scourer, then polish. Obviously take it easy with the wire wool.

Sounds like hard work. Easier to just buy another pair of skis wink
