radar, little ms spock, et al, well worth remembering that the direct Eurostar service is not the only way to let the train take the strain. The Eurostar service is convenient (no changes) but expensive, and only runs on Fridays and Saturdays. If you book early enough (4 months for Eurostar and 3 months for Rail Europe) you can get to the alps by train for under £140 return any day of the week: £69 return to Paris on Eurostar and £70 return to resort on SNCF. If prepared to sit in a seat overnight (like the Friday night Eurostar) you can get an even cheaper SNCF fare. Changing stations in Paris is easy, even with full ski kit (ski bag, wheelie hold-all, and boot bag). And French trains are punctual, comfortable, tidy and clean. Then its just a 40 minute €12 ride up to the resort - there are buses to meet each train. See Altibus or http://www.autocars-berard.com/.

Jonpim, Good point for Bourg and agree with you about the ease, though I'm off to Verbier and could have taken the train which would have been great

Typical train companies - get pricing wrong and then launch a last minute offer when everyone has already booked their flights - why oh why cannot train operators show the commercial acumen/savvy of the airlines (even down to not being able to simply book complex routes on the web) - ah, they are full of civil servants who do not understand customers!

countryman, the reason they are doing it is prior bookings were not as anticipated given that that is the Easter period - I think people are nervous about the snow lasting until then.
I just did this trip for less than that - £104 return and fyi - the

is free on your lift pass which you can either buy at the base of the furnicular or on line prior. If not then it's worth knowing the €12 is a return so if you plan to ski the last day before coming down, buy a single.
The Snowtrain is great but really dificult to book early enough - most of the seats go in the first 24 hrs after release, which is a bit of a lottery in itself.
Since, however, I am about to go again at the end of March ......

countryman, Not an issue with DBB, OEBB and SBB..............book early for best deals, 92 day before date of travel. eg 19€ return pp from Munich to St Anton...........on top of £65 return flight MAN-MUC incl free ski carriage, who needs Eurostar, just not practical if you live oop North anyway, costs a mint just to get to the smoke! Dont think I'll be skiing too good in 2040 or whenever HS2 eventually gets built and the trains to the Alps are then a realistic option................

Just checked - no discount for France still £600 for a couple standard return. Looks like Avios points + car hire is a winner.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

£119 each way from St Pancras to Aigle. Then need to get to Chatel and back. And from home to St Pancras for before 07.00.
Our usual lads' trip comes in around £75 each for a return Easyjet flight to GVA and about £300 for a hire car plus petrol split four ways. So transport (including whatever running around resort or to other resorts we do) is about £150 per head. I'll be leaving home around 15.00 a week on Saturday and arriving in Chatel around 22.00 so around 6 hours journey time compared to at least 11 hours by train.
When I drive out with the family I can do it in around 12 hours by car at a cost of about £100 per head.
Doesn't stack up for me I'm afraid

You know it makes sense.

£45 return (per person) from Liverpool to GVA with Easyjet this January. Train is no competition for us Northern types I'm afraid.
