Poster: A snowHead
|
Heading to Austria at the end of March. Was planning to stay in St. Anton but now I am considering staying in Lech. I realize you can ski both areas regardless of where you stay. I've heard Lech is the more scenic, albeit more quiet town. We would like a little nightlife but will be in bed by 11 and don't need anything crazy. Wife is an intermediate skier who will do morning group lessons. I will hire a guide for a day or 2 to do off piste. Any suggestions as to which town is preferable?

If you want apres (be in bed by 9), St Anton.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

chraya, Lech is pricier, more upmarket, prettier and pistes are more groomed. St Anton more of a party town, great swimming pool, better for shopping, cheaper and a bit rowdier.

chraya, Nozza sums it up well as always.
if 'Nightlife' = standing on a table half naked screaming along with 'Livin' on a Prayer', go to Stanton
if 'Nightlife' = sipping krug while tapping your foot to Burt Bacharach (sp), go to Lech
My preference is for the latter but I'm always out-voted by my chavvy mates.

Was in Lech in summer -seemed white trousers for both male and female were mandatory evening attire - it was like an ice cream van conventention.

I used to think I'd like to go to Lech, but now I'm not too sure. I don't think my wardrobe would be up to it. I don't possess a pair of white trousers, for a start.

I did once get caught in a traffic jam in Lech caused by three red Ferraris. Sadly my car was not the fourth...

The quality of those skiing on piste in Lech is better and a bit more sedate than St.Anton i.e. lots of macho idiots on the St.Anton slopes.
Lech does have a special quality about it.

If it's like the old days, the off-piste at Lech takes quite a lot longer to get trashed after a powder dump than is the case at St Anton. My guess is that a Lech hotel's prices would be a bit eye-watering, though.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
