ZERO G just posted on the limitations of Hestra insulation in the ski mags thread - and I too was wondering about this. I use a variety of gloves and prefer my Marmot work gloves - but I bought Hestra for my kids since they need the best gloves - kids run cold sometimes without realising it and I want to make sure they are OK on minus days - but my oldest has been complaining about her hands - never did with Salomon gloves. Any other reactions? Hestra make gloves and only gloves so it's weird if they have got it wrong with their generic 'fibrefil'

Agree - I have Hestra GoreTex leather gloves - outers are superb, but I often wear an inner glove as the insulation is not great.
Very happy overall though.
Also got the 3 finger pair which are very good.

valais2, I've used my Hestras about 50 days now, I don't find them any warmer than all other gloves (but I don't suffer). Definitely as good as anything else I've tried.

valais2, My son had Hestra primaloft goretex mitts for two seasons, never a complaint, always warm and dry. He then had a pair of quiksilver '3 finger mitts' good for dexterity but got wet easily, had to replace them last week on holiday couldn't get Hestra so got Gordini. Will get him more Hestra mitts when I find some. Maybe the issue is mitts not gloves? I went back to mitts last week on a minus 14 day, what a difference!

To be clear, I said Hestra's own fibrefill insulation is rubbish in cold temps. I have the army leather gloves and the heli ski mitts, which both use Hestra's fibrefill. I don't wear them because they are not warm enough in cold temps.
Hestra gloves and mitts with Primaloft insulation are very good in cold temps, e.g. their piste-oriented Czone gloves and mitts (with 100g Primaloft), which are nice and toasty. I have very little body fat, so my extremities suffer when my body tries to keep the core warm.
We've had some bitterly cold temps in Cham this season (the coldest I've experienced) and the Czones weren't warm enough. Bought some Black Diamond Mercury mitts, which also have Primaloft but its 285g of Primaloft, so the warmest mitts out there. I saw some Marmot Women's Warmest Mitts that, like the BD mitts, have 285g Primaloft insulation. They looked like a more comfortable mitt but didn't have any in my size.

All gloves, including Hestra, pop out of two far eastern glove manufacturers, the Atlas Glove Company and another whose name escapes me. You may buy a brand but you are getting same tech found in other brands in other markets - same membranes, same wadding, same manufacturing process. Yes, the brands spec up their gloves but look closely and you'll see many styles common to many brands but all at different price points. I'd say don't be conned by the name, it's no guarantee that the gloves that went before are an indication of what they are like going forwards. Ignore the brand, try loads on and study them closely.

Junior has the Hestra gore-tex junior gloves with fiberfill insulation and they are by far the best gloves he has ever had (he suffers from the cold as he is a skinny little git).
I've got the leather Kaj & Sverre ones coz I loved the colours (well they were a very good price). They have the wooly liners. It went down to -20ish last year, and I must admit they weren't as warm as my old gloves, but then I'm not a sufferer so I didn't mind that particularly.

Bode Swiller, I agree and the first place I look for replacements is the DIY and work clothing supliers. Same quality and half the price.

I recently brought a pair of Hestra gloves which use the fiberfill insulation and I have found them to be great, I dont seem to sweat in these gloves as I normally do in others. That said I'm more of a hot person (rather than feeling the cold) and I chose them based on fit and comfortable, there was only one day when I had numb fingers and that was in -18 with no fleece under my shell jacket so my core wasn't warn enough...

I also used to buy Hestra for the kids on the basis that I wanted Then to have the best. I rapidly gave up doing so as their hands were never warm. I have abandonned them as a brand completely as imho they are hopeless.

I also had a bad experience with Hestra - now relegated to spares and much-mended, cheapo gloves returned to everyday use. Annoying. I think it's the only recommendation I've ever followed on snowHeads which hasn't worked out.
