Sort of forgotten about all the fires in the mountains and some of the shots here are stunning especially when fires still burning under the snow are exposed.
Amazing film. Confirms that there are braver men than me out there!

having dropped onto a stump in the trees I cringe every time I see it here in wild woods and the fire embers that fly up when they hit a buried burning log is incredible to see.

Ricklovesthepowder, The untense heat of the initial fire is so great that inside the fire boundary the lack of oxygen turns the outer layers of the trees to charcoal and they go into a much longer second burn that needs much less oxygen to continue. Also these threes are highly resinous . . . AFAIK trees can burn for weeks like this. If the snow is light enough and the air cold then there is enough air and heat suppression to let the tree keep very slowly burning under the snow without melting more than a small pocket at the most, around it. When the skis hit this it breaks up and embers fly out and blaze in the new air.
Bit like the way you can damp down a wood fired cast stove to virtually cold but the fire is still lit when you open the vents and flue.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Almost seems unreal. Superb film - especially the embers flying up from the skis
