As nbt, certainly nothing like as steep as that, even the top part - but perhaps there might be a way in that was that steep for the first 5 metres? Certainly steep at the top but very quickly it becomes just an ordinary run. (but why is this in this thread?)

People stress too much about untracked IMO - crossing the odd track won't kill anyone and often means you can get more pow vert in per lap without an endless traverse.
The saying is apt because it's a perfect summary of the tension between common sense and powder frenzy everyone experiences on a powder day. I usually don't actually enjoy my first run that much because a) I cock something up because I'm too amped and b) the stress of racing others to a "perfect" line.
That said a couple of the most memorable runs of my life have been on US "rope drop" chinese downhills where if you fall in the first 50 yards someone will ski over you and there is usually a pinch point before hitting a joyous wide open area. Of course it's an easier call to make if you know the reason the rope has dropped is that patrol have already bombed the poo-poo out of trigger points or left it consolidating for a couple of days.

^^^^ agreed , easier to ski a tracked line , but make your own turns , than have to spoon someone else's turn shape for etiquette sake !,
But on the serious side of the thread , have to wholeheartedly agree with the blog , more thought for others can and will save lives !!

LayneI would imagine he was joking, we say that too!!! DEFINITELY NO FRIENDS ON POWDER DAYS!!!!!!! Of course we all look out for each other, the consequences are too serious not to.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Layne, Yes it was meant as a joke. Our meaning of the expression was linked to gear and the guys who were always late at the start, can you lend me powder traces? Has anyone got any......? Where's my poles with the big baskets? Have I got time to go to Oggies for breakfast? And a dear friend that would ski knee high powder on 155 rd slalom skis he was a tremendous skier but would regularly hit things others had missed due to his line being constant verticalis and would have to be dug out. We always took safety for others as a given because we had at least 10 years apprenticeships of rare powder days on 205 GS skis.

Really the phrase only applies in America (from my limited experience there). Usually there are plenty of freshies for a day or two after new snow (or a week with a guide) - though it is getting worse, I have to admit. In the US they even talk about places which have afternoon freshies on a powder day as something notable

I think you'll find that they're talking about freshies ON piste. At least that's my experience in Canada where I have regularly skied fresh tracks on piste in the afternoon. Off piste it's basically freshies for as long as the snow is there.

Had the real thing tonight, 10 o'clock heavy snow on the road 40 miles to go, me 4 wheel drive, snow tyres, 350 bhp, them in ditches, spinning all over the road, can't get up hill or down, you know you have to keep moving unless you see life or death situation or you needn't have bothered to winter prepare, they didn't.
