Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The best all-mountain skiier ever? (since plastic boots!)

Vallencant? Schmidt? Coombs? Ian Mac? Fransson?

I'm going with Baud just because of his turn

Who do you think? And why?

Very difficult.

+1 for Baud, but when you look at some of the current skiers, e.g. fransson, they're really pushing the envelope.

If you're looking particularly at popularising stuff, Plake, Schmidt and Hattrup have to be up there.

Heck, they have to be up there on any criteria.

I consider myself to be the best skier on this forum, in fact on any forum, by far. Until recently, my claim to fame was skiing switch from Everest's summit, but only a few weeks ago, I managed to hitch a lift on a North Korean rocket, and skied the back side of Mars. The powder was awesome, with no snowploughers in sight.

If anyone wants advice on skiing elsewhere in the solar system, just ask. I'll be happy to share my expert advice.

And then there's this

Planets? I did a season in MACS0647-JD. Bloody Ryanair sent my kit to IC 1101, but luckily there was an Intersport there. I didn't get the skis I paid for, but that's a different story.

I'M Spartacus!!!!!! Cool

Plake, simply for his longevity. Plus the fact that skis are now galactically better than 30 years ago.

The guy from London who was in the Pacific bar in Val D'Isere last year......Judging by the way he was banging on about his powder skiing capability.

So my vote is him.

Actual all-mountain maybe someone consistent like Aurelien Ducroz at the moment or Coombes in the day, McConkey gets a vote for general awesomeness, Glen Plake for old school, Rhalves for the Freeride/race mix and Richard Permin at the moment

Hermann Maier. If he could ski like he did on glorified ice, imagine what he could have done on powder.

Nickski, well you may say that but there was an interesting vid of a DHer running a freeride line, while very impressive, it clearly wasn't his pitch of choice.

Of their generation, when I stared skiing it was Sudain & Vallencant. I met Vallencant at a screening of one of his films, very humble guy with immense talent.

tbh - it's prob some geezer you never heard of who did the Eiger on wooden skis and in leather boots before global warming made an impact. Let's face it, what you are really doing is comparing video in the modern age. Take away the support, the kit and the helicopter and most of those lightweights wouldn't rate at all. Ol' skool - it was always one of the mountian guides who those in the know rated since they had to climb the route from the bottom prior to skiing it in tres dodgy kit that weighed a ton. Respect. We will not see their like again - more's the pity - and I for one shall be raising a glass to them soon.

under a new name, cuts both ways. Take one of the film 'powder gods' and stick them on DH skis and tell them to scream down glorified ice at max speed. I bet they would look comparatively worse. Also with a lot of the film/powder guys these days it's what they do in the air, not on the snow

And Jeremy Nobis certainly made the transition from DH to film/powder god. In fact he upped the ante considerably for gunning couloirs.

That little American racer guy who I also did a Matchstick trip and didn't look to bad.

The off-piste stuff, especially with the equipment now on offer some times seems to me to distract from the talent and technique the racers have. True to some extent for both pro and amateur. You see guys skiing on glorified snowboards and think it must be close to turning off-piste into piste, just without boundaries.

Jon Olson was one guy who could cross over, film/powder/tricks/race. So as an all-mountain, who could do it all and wasn't a specialist, Jon Olson.

On the contrary, it is an excuse to argue about what the hell "all mountain" means anyway. Clearly anyone who hasn't at the very least bashed gates, ground rails and thrown a corked 720 off some alaskan spines couldn't possibly be listed here, right?
