Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hardcore skiers of Whiteface Mountain open the season, while the lifts stay idle

The north-eastern US states have been hit by good snowstorms in recent days, and an annual ritual of 'first turns' has been played out on Whiteface Mountain, New York State. It's in the Adirondacks, near Lake Placid, and was used as a racing venue for the 1980 Winter Olympics. It claims the greatest ski vertical in the eastern United States at more than 3,400 feet.

Here's how the hardcore skiers of Whiteface Mountain cut their first tracks this winter (some with a bit of cheating involving vehicles, it seems!) from Newsday.com

"It's too much snow," Gary Marchuk said, stopping on his descent to chat. "Half of this would have been good."

Marchuk, a licensed guide and longtime backcountry skier, said he'd been there the previous week. He'd strapped his poles on his back, skis to his bicycle, and ridden up. He met another man on top who was probably the Adirondacks' first skier this year.

Anyone skied this mountain? .... or .... Anyone skied this mountain with no lifts?
