hi - we are saving like mad to hopefully ski ar christmas - previoulsy we have always gone to scheffau in austria in feb before the half term. our kids will be 15 and 13 when we go and i'd say we are rusty intermediates! would love to go to scheffau again - short transfer, plenty of skiing nice hotel etc, but unsure how good the snow is as it's quite a low resort. soooo any other austrian suggestions welcomed - not bothered about lively resort. alternatively, what about italian options? look forward to any ideas/experiences - we'd go at feb half term but the cost is just too prohibitve and having monitored prices for the last year, xmas does seem to be cheaper

zarazag, if you mean Christmas 2013, I should think scheffau would be fine. Obviously Christmas is a slight gamble, snow-wise, wherever you go, but no more of a gamble there than most places. On the whole I get the impression that Austria often has better early snow than Italy.

We've been Christmas and New Year to various places for the past 5 years, always had plenty enough snow. Might be ropey as far as the village, but should always be fine once you get up the lift (Brandstadl I think). Was a bit like this when we were in Ellmau that time of year a couple of years ago.
If you want snow sure for Christmas in Italy check out Cervinia.

Having been in skiwelt for the past two Christmas (and indeed since mid-December), then you don't need to worry. Some 80/90% of the slopes are anyhow covered with snow cannon, so if nature fails to provide, then they will fill in the gaps.

zarazag, Serfaus / Fiss would be a good Crimbo alternative to delightful Scheffau.
Higher & more snow-sure and even more family friendly.

Why not consider the Dolomites??
Snow making in the Dolomites is extensive, last year snow was in pretty short supply, most pistes are meadows, so they don't need vast amounts, but most of the Sella Ronda area was open for the Christmas week, this year conditions were excellent in the whole area, and they have the FIS Ski World Cup Dolomiti Classics the week before Xmas, this year 13th-16th, so seem to make a special effort.
The skiing is as hard as you want it to be, from vast areas of easy blues, to off piste with a guide, but the majority are reds mixed with a hint of blue. The scenery is amazing, as is the food, and prices are also reasonable.
Christmas eve is their big celebration, and everything is open as usual on Christmas day, except the banks.
We have been to Selva val Gardena at Christmas for the last 3 years, and had a fantastic time every year. Previously we went high, to L2A, and were blown off the mountain for 3 days of our 6, so as with any mountain holiday, you pay your money, etc....

Don't panic there's always some snow around
Been away christmas/new year for years now, sometimes very low resorts, ie german allgau region as well as mayrhofen/zillertal and matrei.
If you go for the full two weeks it might be worth thinking about driving which works out cheaper than a 4 people flying. The car then gives you more freedom for hunting out snowholes if it's a lean year.
