Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recommendations for resorts in southern Austria sought

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi, I'm planning on flying out to Klagenfurt in Feb and then taking the train to Brunico to meet some friends.
I'd like to stop off at one or two resorts en route, and am just looking for any recommendations.
Rail-accessible resorts in the area I'm aware of include Gerlitzen, Spittal an der Drau, Lienz and Sillian.
Don't need masses of skiing as will only be at each place for a day but would like attractive towns, splendid Dolomitian scenery, and relatively easy access between railway stations and ski areas.
Any thoughts/info etc much appreciated.
Thanks.
Neil Neige

Neil Neige, are you stopping at Brunico / Bruneck and skiing around there? Looking for somewhere else en route?
If you are not looking for somewhere other than Bruneck (which links into Kronplatz) then the easiest access by train that I know of is Kronplatz which you can access from the railway station at Perca / Percha.
Details are at http://www.kronplatz.com/en/live/news/news-at-the-perca-percha-cable-car-valley-station-28092012/

We stayed in Lienz last April before driving through towards Bruneck. It is an attractive and real town, mountains rising up on all sides. Our hotel was a little up on the west side of town (not so convenient if you are travelling by train) and just off the piste down from Hochstein (if there had been any snow on it by then) which goes right down almost to the town centre. Also skiing on the other side of town at Zettersfeld. So we didn't try the skiing but it looked worth a day or two.

John Smith - thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually ending up at Brunico and skiiing with friends there for a few days. I read about Percha. Looks like they've got a new gondola right by the train station - sounds ideal! So, I'm looking for some extra places on the way there from Klagenfurt, really.

One gun - thank you for this. Lienz does sound nice so I think I may well have a day and overnight stay there. Looks like there are two local skiing areas linked by bus.
Wonder what the nearby Sillian's like...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Would Nassfeld/Hermagor be too far off the beaten track for you? It's worth a visit! There's a train station at Hermagor.

Another thought, though again I haven't skied there, would be Innichen/Sexten, just into Italy - and on the Dolomiti Superski pass if you would be getting one of them when you get to Bruneck.
