Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing the alphabet in Switzerland

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Here's a thought project for the next season to while away the non-skiing days now.

How would you ski the alphabet in Switzerland in one season?
For example from "A" for Arosa to "Z" for Zermatt.

There over 200 ski resorts in Switzerland so it should be possible.

These are the rules that I think make sense:

    1. Resorts do not need to be skied in alphabetical order

    2. Prefixes such as "Le/La/Les" or "St" and (crucially) "Hoch" may be ignored

    3. Be realistic, do not include the resorts that are often closed for lack of snow.

    4. Be efficient, pick resorts with different ski areas that provide several letters in one trip.

    5. If desperate use a resort that has the letter in it somewhere

Woolly area: What to select when a ski resort name is different to its skiing area. Example : should St Moritz be "M" for the town or "C" for Corviglia? I tend to the ski area taking precedence, as then I get much more out of Davos.

This is the current proposal. To reduce costs, preference has been given to the resorts covered by the Magic Pass https://www.magicpass.ch/en/ski-resorts/

    A: Arosa (from Lenzerheide)
    B: Bruson (4V)
    C: Churwalden (from Lenzerheide)
D: [Les] Diablerets (MP & near to Leysin)
E: Evolene (near to 4V area)
    F: Flims/Falera (connects to LaaX)
    G: Grindelwald (connects to Wengen)
    H: Hasliberg
    I: Ibergeregg or St Imier
    J: Jakobshorn (Davos)
    K: Klosters (from Davos)
    L: Lenzerheide or Leysin (MP)
M: Les Mosses (MP & next to Leysin) or Madrisa (Davos)
    N: Nendaz (4V)
    O: Ovronnaz (MP)
    P: Parsenn (Davos)
    Q: Le PâQuier / Crêt-du-Puy (check availability)
    R: Rinerhorn (Davos)
    S: Saas-Fee (MP)
    T: [La] Tzoumaz (4V)
U: Unterbäch (near Visp en route to Saas-Fee)
V: Verbier (4V) (or Valbella from Lenzerheide)
    W: Wengen (connects to Grindelwald)
    X: LaaX (connects to Flims)
    Y: [Hoch] Ybrig
    Z: Zinal (MP)

Key:
MP - Resort covered by the Magic Pass
4V - Resort covered by the 4 Vallees pass

Thanks for Ibergeregg and St Imier. I thought I'd have to bending the rules a little for "I" and go for Ischgl, which, although in Austria is linked to Samnaun in CH.

I thought the Portes du Soleil would be a definite destination due to its multiple resorts, but in the end all its letters were covered by other resorts. Oh well.

Does Crans-Montana count as 2?

Yes I think that's fair, the resort started as two separate villages.

Just off the cuff and from memory:

A: Adelboden, Anzère
B: Bruson
C: Crans, [les] Collons
D: Davos
E: Engelberg
F: [la] Fouly
G: Grimentz, Grindelwald
H:
I:
J:
K: Kandersteg
L:
M:
N: Nendaz
O: Ovronnaz
P:
Q:
R: Rideralp
S: Saas-Fe
T: [la] Tzoumaz
U:
V: Verbier, Visperterminen, Veysonnaz
W: Wengen
X:
Y: Ybrig?
Z: Zinal

The Quatre Vallées is a good target because it means you can do La Tzoumaz, Bruson Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Les Collons in one day. And it's a short hop to Ovronnaz and up to Sion with Grimentz-Zinal on one side and Crans-Montana on the other.

is you're going for multiples then Arosa & Lenzerheide are linked, and Laax covers Flims, Laax & Falera (bonus f for free). They are also close so you ski one in the morning and one in the afternoon. collect an A, 2 Ls and 2 Fs. Is Flalf a word if you have to make an anagram out of your day for bonus points?

I've ridden 9 of the above plus another 7 but can't come up with an X, a U or a Q.

It doesn't look like it should be too difficult but what is the budget? Anyone up for a Snowheads raffle?

There will be plenty of Qs once the season opens again.

I am also stuck for a "Q" and an "X"!

My innovative solution for Q was "Churwalden" which sounds like it starts with a Q if you pronounce it the way the inhabitants do. Not good I know.

But I think for these two cases only and in desperation we should allow resorts that have the letter in the name somewhere. So:
    Q: Le PâQuier / Crêt-du-Puy (check availability)
    X: LaaX

Les Quatres Vallées fir the Q.

We have a couloir XV here but think you’ll struggle for a resort. Resort X often used to hide the real location...
