Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hello there.

So far we have booked our Eurostar for something like a 7.30am departure. Mr Farry will be doing all the driving and would like to get most of the way to VD before stopping overnight and doing the last little bit the following morning. We also have little Miss Farry who is only one yr old so will have to take frequent ish breaks. Realistically how far do you think we can get and any recommendations for route/family hotels/place to stop over?

I think Mr Farry is thinking mostly motorway - I am afraid I have no idea where this route actually goes. Can anyone enlighten me?

We were on a 6:30 departure a couple of years ago and drove to Lyon where we stopped overnight. Arrived mid aftenoon , gave us some time for sightseeing too. Leaves about a 3 hour drive for the next day.

Farry, I'd be bashing right on to Montmelian/ Alberville and leaving just a short early ride up in the morning, (assuming you want to ski/ board that day?) That said I'd be catching an earlier crossing and travelling earlier to avoid traffic, we prefer travelling through the night/ morning and getting there in the afternoon.

The standard route is Calais - Reims - Troyes - Dijon - Lyon - Chambery - Val D. Most of it is motorway and tolled. It's not worth trying to avoid it. Buy a doofer from www.aprr.fr if you don't want to faff at the tolls. One driver the whole way can be a bit tough. Make sure Mr Farry has everything he needs to keep him alert. You'll be stopping for the bab a few times I would imagine so that should help Smile

We've never stayed that far down and/or mostly driving overnight so no hotel recs sorry.

We were on an 08:50 shuttle last Friday and easily made it to Albertville for our overnight stop. We were there by 19:00 and we stopped twice for coffee/food etc.

Farry, Just north of Lyon is comfortable with plenty of stops.

From our experience at that age little ones slept a lot so we didn't actually stop - the worst years were between 2 and 6/7 when they wanted to stop, couldn't entertain themselves etc.

The route above is easy and a nice drive - doofer is worth it - personally I went for one via saneftolling.co.uk is a little more expensive but site and everything else is in English,

I wonder when Farry is going? If it's half term and they are planning on an overnight stop near the resorts they might be in for a disappointment.

Thanks. We are going end Feb, crucially AFTER half term. Sounds like bit beyond Lyon for a stop. Not sure Aberville is as do-able as I have a feeling little Farry will have had enough by 6 pm and there's nothing worse then driving with high whinge factor!

Any recommendations for family friendly accommodation near Lyon? Otherwise will check out major chains like holiday inn etc.

Thanks for the advice.

We had a duff doofer last year for the tolls and won't bother this year. It only worked about twice before giving up the ghost. Was way more hassle then it was worth. Sounds like just a bad bit of luck on our part but it has put me off. Didn't find the tolls that bothersome though.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

but still very busy - French hols, though the Paris holidays, which are the worst, aren't till the beginning of March (two weeks, 2 - 16 March). Driving into the resort will be pretty busy all day - best either be very early or much later. Book your hotel as soon as you can - they get pretty busy, approaching the resorts, on those busy Fridays. If you

We are travelling on 22nd and staying for 2 weeks so hopefully missing the worse of both the uk and French school holidays. We are driving most of Saturday stopping overnight and coming into resort on Sunday.

Looks like we could go a little further than Lyon but not as far as albertville (going with gut here).

After a brief chat with Mr Farry we've now booked Novotel in Macon just north of lyon. Many thanks for all your suggestions.

Farry, Good choice we are booked in there on the 16th. We figured close enough to do an early morning run the next day and to arrive at a reasonable time and hopefully avoid some of the traffic.

I saw a post which suggested an alternative route from Dijon via Bourg en Bresse down to the Lyon bypass. Is that just to avoid traffic on the A6 ?

mikeh, yes, but with the opening of the new part of the A432 which takes you past Lyon airport and up towards Villefranche, it isn't nearly so bad. It was always the ring road aroung Lyon that did it for us and the toll booth at Villefranche. However on the whole we still detour via Bourg en Bresse, and our sat nav says it is 11km further, and adds 4 minutes onto the journey time.
