Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zell am See questions

Hi All,

I've skied in ZaS on a couple of day trips years ago (stayed in Kaprun) and have some questions for those of you that know the area well as we are off for a week in Feb.

What's the best 'just off the slopes' Apres bar? What's the best bar for later, 9-12, are there any with live music?

Having used the search facility there seems to be mixed reports on this one, does the Alpen pass cover the bus journey to Saalbach?

As we are in training and need to keep running whilst there, are there any areas where we can run, preferably a 5-10 mile stretch? I seem to remember the Kaprun to ZaS road being pretty flat but can't remember if there is a footpath?

Finally, does Zell have any off-piste opportunities?, when there before I was with a mixed group so never even looked at this.

Thanks,

Bendy

Ben Dover,

Famous porno actor eh???

Can't comment on apres ski - not really that into it. Many people mention Crazy Daisey and there are a couple of good Irish bars. There are a few outdoor bars near the bottom of the cityexpress lift and some in the town.

The Alpen card does not pay for the bus to Saalbach. Last year this cost 6-7 euros per person, return.

There is a good circular run around the lake about 6/7 miles I think (not done it myself as skiing usually is enough for my old legs!).

Off piste is limited in Z-A-S unfortunately, however there are runs through trees & under ski lifts. I couldn't vouch for safety/quality. That type of skiing is well beyond my capabilities.

Along the "168" (the road from Zell towards Kaprun) is a footpath, which does leave the road on a few occassions when it goes via Aufhausen, Fürth and Piesendorf. At the roundabout where you can turn left to Kaprun, just follow the 168 in the direction of Mittersill. The footpath goes at least as far as Walchen. (Just zoom in on Google maps and you'll see what I am writing about.) This footpath is usually fairly doable.

Deihlie bar (sp?) was good for Apres while Crazy Daisies had live music on every night I was there.

The best of the Irish bars is A Bit of Irish Pub. My only regret was finding it on the 2nd last night. They have a great table quiz one of the nights. Ginhouse or the outside bar of the ginhouse (can't remember the hotel name) is ok for apres ski. As is the little makeshift hut in the middle of the main square.

Ourcate1, I would recommend you email and book the lockers in advance, i.e.now, you are unlikely to get one on arrival if you haven't.
