Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sorry, a helmet query - Leeds

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My 21 year old son is going on a Leeds uni ski holiday and having observed his skiing over Xmas my husband is desperate to get him to wear a helmet. We would like to buy one before he goes but for obvious reasons he will need to go into a shop to make the purchase.

So, are there any shops in the Leeds area that sell them and is there any particular place that's likely to convince him, ie style. colour, knowledgeable expert skier selling them etc etc

I would much appreciate any positive advice. Thank you.

There's quite a few shops at Xscape, Castleford that sell them. Or you've got Nevisport and Seven Sports in Leeds. I'd make the trip to Cas if I were you.

Try a good selection on; stick it on his head, leave it unfastened and get him to shake his head. If it doesn't move and isn't crushing his skull you've cracked it.

True. Under no circumstances should helmets be worn with sunnies!

Go to Cas, massive selection of shops and helmets there.

He can get the train if he doesn't have a car.

Just show him a few videos of the pro skiers shredding the back-country, they all wear helmets, and he'll soon wan to wear one too cos it's cool.

My husband kept pointing out how many expert skiers we saw wearing them over Xmas at La Rosiere. I think we have to just keep chipping away at him!

CaravanSkier, Check out Glide and Slide in Otley for a range of helmets, they have an excellent website, and their staff are experienced and knowledgable. snowHead

First time I have worn one, husband insisted this year...on all the pics we have posted on FB of our hols, quite a few skiing friends have commented on the number of people now wearing lids, certainly in the majority over hats. I was pleasantly surprised at how I got on with it, didn't seem to impede hearing or anything and kept my ears nice and warm too!!

CaravanSkier, are you making any financial contribution to his student life and/or the trip? If so, you have leverage. Twisted Evil

Yes to both pam, but if he is not basically convinced he simply won`t wear it when he`s there. I just have to convince him.

CaravanSkier, wet marble floor and snowboard boots with all the grip of a greased weasel . . . back of my head bounced full of white sparks Evil or Very Mad figured I could do a lot more damage on the hill. Had to replace two so far so probably one of the best decisions I've made and even then I've had to sit still for a while and collect my wits.

Sounds painful Masque, but a pain worth having because it sounds as though its saved you grief subsequently!

CaravanSkier, it's like being married - you need to make him think it's his idea .....

I suspect the safety aspect will not work as he thinks he's invincible .... but maybe the fact that all the 'gnarly dudes' in the park are wearing them etc...... OOH i am SOOOOOO middle aged !

Like many others I first got a helmet after smacking my head - not on the toilet floor like Masque, though Shocked

It needs to be personal choice though , as you say if you 'make him' have one may put him off for life ... If he does not get one before this trip, he'll probably see it's a good idea for next time ....

My son is safely back having had a wonderful week in Val Thorens. He intended to hire a helmet but found one the first day in the end of season sale for 50 euros so bought it. I doubt he will ever ski without a helmet again having practiced acrobatics with landings onto an air bag and having seen some of the damage to helmets where skis have contacted! Plus he took quite a tumble himself off piste, cut open his chin and subsequently saw some rather large scratches on his helmet!

CaravanSkier, Good to hear, I have seen some absolutely awful prangs this season and it was good to see most of them had helmets on and were ok (I took some persuading to get one a while back). Now he's used to it he'll wear it all the time. My son has to wear one for work as a ski instructor and he puts it on automatically now when he is off out on his own or with mates.
Very Happy

Mosha Marc, given that I don't possess a dark goggles lens, if it is overly sunny in VT I will sport the sunglasses and helmet look and not care two hoots what other people might think.

If it's that bright you could always wear your sunnies under your goggles.
