Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

US ski resort is first to allow unrestricted airboarding

The Oregon resort of Hoodoo claims to be the first to allow unrestricted airboarding (snow bodyboarding) - from this winter.

Airboarding is done headfirst on an inflatable 'bodyboard', providing riders with a comfortable ride, stopping ability and speed control. This makes it technically possible to snow-surf the same terrain that skiers and snowboarders enjoy - according to its promoters.

"Stopping ability"? I doubt that very much. If these guys share the same slopes as skiers and boarders look outr for many head-knee collisions.

This is what former British Olympic downhiller Konrad Bartelski had to say about airboarding in the Observer a couple of weeks back:
Quote:
There was no fearing for my life - this was exciting but immediately I felt in control. Just inches above the snow, this was a reassuring thought, and as a bonus, the air in the 'board' was taking the pain out of the ride. It was like lying on a high-speed bean-bag, and by leaning my body gently from side to side the Airboard would go exactly where it was told. It felt as responsive as a little go-kart.

His full article here.

Konrad Bartelski doesn't talk specifically about braking, which apparently is done with a hockey-stop/skid type turn, but I guess there's some degree of braking ability.

Not sure who's selling airboards in the UK - anyone seen them?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'm sure there's some stopping and steering ability (just as when there was when i used to do something similar to this many years ago, called tobogganing), but I can't see it can be even remotely close to the control that skiers and boarders have. I think it would be an absolute menace to have these lilo-kings sharing the same slope as people who have sharp edges on their weapon of choice.

So, on the basis that 'the meek shall inherit the earth', who should inherit the piste?

Very good!

I cycle around London and have certain issues about my rights to roadspace. Three weeks ago I was cut up by a massive red London double-decker bus that squeezed me into a parked car as it dangerously overtook me. It was like being terrorised by a 20ft high red cliff.

As far as I'm aware penny-farthings were on the streets before cars, white vans, juggernauts and other 'stones'.

I'd certainly be safer zipping around London on an airbag right now.
