The various chat rooms come up with a number of places for happy hour but no details such as time or what they offer.
My past experience of Cham has been that Monkey bar and Munster, which are close together, clearly advertise ther offers but the others don't. For that reason I normally go there after skiing, but would like to wander this trip.
Any suggestions/details?

Chambre Neuf for dancing on tables, shouting "SKOL!" between songs and drunk Scandinavians.
Elevation for a more mellow climbers' hangout.
Terrasse if there are lots of you. They do a deal on pitchers at certain times.
Monkey and Munster are the cheapest options in town.

Bar d'Up - they do a buy one get one free happy hour... I think it was 5-7pm but not 100% sure on that...
Mainly a seasonaire crowd from what I remember

Yep Bar d'Up is good too - forgot to mention that one.
Also the Vagabond is full of locals. You can often get dancing on tables here too.

What's the microbrewery like?
(This from a bloke whose last night on the lash in Cham town consisted of Chouca, Jeans Bar and le Garage...).

Cymru am Byth, I picked up an events calendar handout called The Messenger from Sole boot lab that details different bars/clubs and their respective happy hours. It seems to cover two-week periods, so it may be helpful to get your hands on the latest one when you arrive.

andy from embsay, The Microbrewery is the ONLY place in Chamonix where you can get something close to real ale. They have three types on offer all the time and a guest beer once a month. Mondays are busy days as they have a half price offer on chicken wings. Book a table, especially if you have large group.
Choucas isn't even open this year - something to do with noise problems.
The Messenger is a really useful guide to what is happening in the valley's bars on each day of the week. It also tells you the various happy hour times for each bar listed (if they have a happy hour) You can get it from a few different sources. It is produced by one of the guys from Monkey Bar but isn't biased.

Thanks Chambles - we're only there for three or four days and we're staying up in Argentiere (that'll be The Office then...) but we're having a night out on the Sunday in Chamonix.

Ok - here's another question; we're going to have a day down at Brevent/Flegere, and will be coming down from Brevent - we'll have an hour or two before we get picked up, so where's easy to get to in ski boots from Brevent for a beer. Doesn't have to be bouncing, as there'll be 8 of us, so easy to walk to, easy to get picked up from and easy to get a table are probably the key criteria!
|
|
|
|
|
|
There is a very small bar at the top of the Brevent hill next to the station but 8 people will pretty much fill it.
The rest of the pubs /bars are down the hill in Chamonix but Rue la Mollard is a very steep hill, quite difficult to walk down in ski boots. Your best bet would be to ski down the Savoy nursery slope thus avoiding the walk down the hill. Then your closest bar is Boules de Neige with some parking for your driver. All of the windows of the bar look out onto the road so you'll be able to see when he/she arrives.
If you want to walk a bit further then all of the bars in the town centre are easily accessible but then you have more issues with being picked up.

Depends what you want really. If you like sweaty apres ski then Chambre Neuf is definitely the place.
But for cheap(er) beer and a game of pool (and English footie if you're into that sort of thing) Bar d'Up is the place.

Where's Bar d'Up? Is it easy enough to get to once we ski down Savoyard?

andy from embsay, dead easy. Once you've skied down the Savoyard cross the car park and walk past the Club Med to the main road. Walk straight into town and you'll see it on the right as you cross the river. It is near where all the main bus stops are on the Avenue de Mont Blanc.

Bar d'UP is on Rue des Moulins with quite a few other bars too. The Bistrot Gourmand is a good place to go for some 'civilised' drinks. The owner really knows his wine so ask for his recommendation. Also ask for a plate of cheese and meat - lovely little nibbles to go with your wine.
