Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Downsizing advice for Salomon XMax

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've read that the salomon XMAX should be downsized. I'm confident this might be fine for shell, but not liner. I'm already a sub-cm shell fit with heel grinding, and my foot wouldn't physically fit in a 7.5 liner.

That being case, should I forget these boots? (Yes, too cheap for Vacuums)

Don't believe the hype just have your feet measured and buy the right size

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

OnPisteSkier, the shell on the X Max is very big so it often needs to be smaller than the measured size, i measure just shy of 29 and the 27.5 shell has a good performance shell check in it, the liner is very tight but after moulding was fine to ski in with no further modification

not really down sizing, more correct sizing... the numbers on the measurer are a foot size, not a boot size, problme is there is so much disparity between the number on the box and the size of the product

i should qualify that statement.... if the heel has been ground already and you still have sub 1cm it was a pretty tight call, possibly with a different liner things will work out better than with the stock liner.... not got your foot here to tell you and it will depend on the level of performance you are looking for against comfort....... guessing you are in the USA or Canada

CEM, this is a good point, there are always going to be some differences between shoe/boot/any footwear makers, presumably because they generally base their product against their market at point of starting the business, but in general if you go and buy a pair of shoes, trousers or whatever the size is going to be pretty similar.

Any idea why a 'standard' isn't in place length/width et al for ski boots?

I understand given the nature of clamping feet tight into plastic there is going to be people who just won't fit the standard......

Or perhaps that's doing you and the other folks in your line of work out of a job?

Hi, thanks for replies.

I should clarify I actually don't need to grind to get the 1 cm shell fit, but as is I'm measured for a 27.5 and choose to ski in a 26.5. Because I'm already downsized, the liner pushes on my big toe.

That said, if we forget about liner, 306mm shells begin to feel loose.

It's just up in the air because I'm already sort of downsized. No shops near me carry them, so unless I try these on during a vacation, I'll be ordering these.

Anyone know the BSL numbers on XMax?

My foot is above average width, yet below average volume. As such, once I grind and punch 98mm boots to deal with hot spots, my feet swims around. I want to do a custom shell since ski boots are generally not shaped like a pancake.

BSL on the XMax is 295 305, 315mm 25, 26, 27

not sure the custom shell will mould out like a pancake..it moves a good bit but not as much as the Fischer would

I disagree, it's a bloody doddle this boot, welcome back to the world of awesome ski boots Salomon.

OnPisteSkier,

This is not a cheap version of Fischers "Sucker" boot, it's a working, useable and reliable model that actually works without all the stupid razzamataz! Stand up, be proud and counted.

I'm off for a ski in my Tecnica now! The world's gone tits!!!!!

Great fitting boot and works very well with around 1cm shell check however I wouldn't say that the boot is that generous on the instep. Get to a shop and get them on your feet.
