Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A snowHead
An innovative snow shelter, originally developed by the British enterprise Shelter Project in 1999, may save lives in earthquake-stricken Kashmir and Pakistan.
Oxfam are urgently encouraging use of the 12 by 12 feet semi-spherical tent, which is made of thick plastic laid over a frame of standard water pipes. This is lined with ordinary blankets. Mud is banked up around the shelter to prevent water from seeping inside and a simple drainpipe can be laid under it for sanitation. The shelter was previously tested in Kosovo and India.
The advantage of the design is that materials can be sourced locally, in the context of the current worldwide scarcity of tents.

A quick search suggests (without confirmation) that this site may show the type of design involved:

Yes these shelters are good and we are also trying to get some but like everything, right now the hardest thing is transport to the remote areas.
Pleased to see another snowhead is following what is happening out there. If anyone wants to get more directly involved please PM snowcrazy directly to find out how you can help.
Thanks
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

, I imagine quite a number of us would like to know - by all means spell it out. This
Guardian report
quotes a UN official in New York ""They don't understand what we're dealing with here. This is our biggest relief operation ever. It's unprecedented in scale."
The article also says, two weeks after the earthquake struck:
Quote:
440,000
Number of tents required
122,000
Number of tents delivered
According to the article temperatures will plummet within 3 weeks, with snowfall exposing the unsheltered to what can only be imagined.
As you suggest, a shortage of helicopters seems to be a major hindrance in bringing relief to the isolated villages.
