Off to Les Deux Alpes in a few weeks. Have been before but this time we've got a kid! I think we've planned for almost everything but time will tell!
Already realise there is no way of travelling light with an 18 month old kid but just wondering if we can buy nappies (preferabley Pampers) at the Spar in L2A? Little one booked into child care and we need to suppy the nappies and I really want to avoid taking 30-40 nappies with us. I'll have enough to be lugging about already?
any one with experience that can tell me?
Cheers[/b]

jayxbee, There is actually quite a large Marche U in L2A. Whilst I've not specifically bought nappies I can't imagine that they don't sell them. There's also a smaller Carrefour and several other supermarkets as well as a few pharmacies.

Nappies are expensive in France. In resort there'll also be the usual 'captive audience' tax in addition.
Bring as many as you can.

Generally the prices in the Marche U are pretty good, not much more than in the valley. I bow to Mr Piehole,s greater experience of french nappies though.

Claude B, yes, he finds them a nice snug fit and they don't show a VDL under his sallies . . .

This. We carted poopsacks for the two Sideways_Jnrs to Peisey last season. Cost enough for a small tub of formula...
About half of my big Dakine wheelie pack was dedicated to defication. Fortunately won't be as much of an issue in ELEVEN DAYS TIME as one is now out of nappies.

jayxbee, Hi which creche are you using, if its the LDA public one, we used it 7 years ago, we were staying at the top end of town, and we had to use 2 local ski buses to get there, plus once off the bus it was an uphill walk with icy steps at the end, so if you are be prepared and take some sole grippers for your shoes. Hope all goes OK for you

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Masque, HA! chance'd be a fine thing - no room in my board bag, full of boots, helmets, trousers, socks, ski poles, and other assorted Sideways Family holiday debris. May have to double up the duct tape this year - wifes skis travel in splendid isolation as nothing else fits in her sodding bag! Stupid skibags!
Oh, for the days when my board travelled in it's own walnut and ivory humidor...

jayxbee, really do take as many as you can unless you are happy to pay about 3 to 4 times the UK price in resort.

You know it makes sense.

As this seems to be an 'all about babies' topic my daughter has discovered that you can't buy Aptimel (baby milk formula) in France - luckily her brother, a kindly uncle to the baby in question is driving here tomorrow evening so will be nipping into Tesco before he leaves.
I recall in the very dim and distant past that we used to buy Pampers on holiday in France and take them back to the UK with us as in those days they were cheaper here than the UK.

Cheers Shimmy ...
Geoff, using the Neilson one in the Hotel Alborg, where we're staying. So it's in the same building. It's the type of hotel I would have avoided at all costs ... until the little one arrived, I bet it's full of little ones!
Pamski, we're off the formula now. That would have been something else to worry about. Ta though.

I assume you are taking a buggy ?
either get a buggy bag to suit and stuff that with all babies stuff ( easily get 60+ pampers in with the buggy
or just tape ( using lots of tape) them to the buggy & put the lot is a big black bag just before you hand it over for loading onto the plane
you will be supprised how much extra you can take that way

and finally, don't stress. the marginal cost of a few days worth of Pampers in resort, as opposed to Tesco, is probably the equivalent of a few beers, if that. Not worth making your travelling (the worst part of most trips with babies) more of a hassle than it needs to be by going loaded to the gunwhales.

jayxbee, Ditch the Pampers and buy supermarket own brand, even at home. Save yourself a fortune. When I had my kids I had sample boxes containing the dear ones, and purchases a number of smaller supermarket ones. I laid them all on a table side by side, thoroughly examined how they were made, 'fitability' etc. and then also road tested the lot. IMHO ASDA own brand were the best out of everyone's inc. Huggies and Pampers. Let's face it whichever ones you use they are only going to deficate in them and then you chuck 'em away. I reckon going supermarket own brand saved me countless oodles of cash over the branded ones over two kids.
And don't get me started on the cr @ p that is formula milk.............................

jayxbee, Hi again, glad your in the Arlberg, the local creche was awful when we used it, we only took our son the once, he was a very content kid, but when we returned to collect him after the initial 2 hour stay they let you have, he was sitting on the floor crying his eyes out, staff just shrugged at us when we asked if he had been OK. That epsiode changed our thoughts on how we went skiing, looked on this site and opted to pay more for a T/O as you have done, and low and behold its been great, our son loved the creche and now at 8 1/2 years old loves the older kids clubs with 1/2 ski school and kids club in PM. We can ski all day most of the week, come back early a couple of days we collect him mid afternoon and all ski together. Doing the same thing this year, hopefully next year he will be strong enough to ski with us each afternoon, more likely we will have trouble keeping up with him Hotel will have lots of kids but its great to see them all enjoying the new experience.
On a more serious note, dont take your son up to the top station, really high altitude is not good for young kids, I think there is a thread on here giving more detailed info, you should be OK going to the Mid Station at L2A if you want to show him the views and give him a ride on the gondola.

Don't know about LdA but pampers readily available in Chamonix, but 34 pampers, stage one, are 16euro in casino, ouch.
