Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can anyone tell me if Durango is any good??Have a friend who wants us to go there with him but dont know if it be worth the money? What is the skiing like and the apres ski??

Any help would be fantastic.

No sooner done than said. Haven't been to Durango I'm afraid, but did have a Phoenix Durango jacket for many years.

Hi from the states!

I have skied Durango a few times. It has primarily tree lined cruising runs across a mountain that is wider than it is tall. Most the skiing is beginner/intermediate with a few mogul runs. There is very little to do at the mountain base after the lifts close (Durango - the town - is 30 min away and is a typical Western town). It gets less snow than other mountains, but the weather tends to be warm and sunny. Southwest Colorado gets gradual snow with early season not recommended.

Frankly, it is not one of America's or Colorado's better mountains. I would recommend tons of places before it -- Telluride, Vail, Aspen, Copper, Steamboat, etc....

Nice for a day or two, but not a week.

mobsta007, I skied there for a couple of days back in 1988 - at that time the ski area was known as Purgatory - I believe they now market it as Durango Mountain Resort, although the base area at the foot of the slopes is still referred to as Purgatory Village, see this link. As chrisc says, there is little to do at the mountain base after the lifts close, I stayed at nearby accomodation called the Bear Ranch which had friendly staff, but I guess the ownership may well have changed since then. Durango itself is a reasonable place to stay - the old western style Strater Hotel on the main street is interesting to visit.
It's certainly enjoyable skiing for a few days. If you are staying longer in the Durango area and have a car, you could also visit Wolf Creek Pass ski area which is about 80 miles away, or Telluride - outstanding snowHead (about 120 miles away). If you fancy a day site seeing, the Mesa Verde National Park with its ancient Indian cliff dwellings is only about 50 miles from Durango.

When does the snow start to fall in Durango?? We r looking to go over xmas ?? The worst thing would to go there and have no snow or brown patches everywhere.

mobsta007, From the first link I gave, it shows that the resort is due to open Nov 24. Since Purgatory Village is at 8793 ft, and the summit is at 10822 ft, I think there will be plenty of snow by Christmas. snowHead
Incidentally the Colorado State Highway 550 northwards from Purgatory which goes over Red Mountain Pass (11018ft) to a town called Ouray is notorious in Winter as one of the most avalanche prone roads in the US! Skullie It is a bit disconcerting driving over the pass with its prominent warning signs about avalanche dangers Shocked : . The good news is that the road south from Purgatory to Durango (6523ft) is much lower elevation and perfectly OK. Cool .

If you do drive from Durango to Telluride I would therefore recommend the alternative lower westerly route via 145 rather than via Red Mountain Pass.

mobsta007, if you wanted some more challenging skiing you could head up to Silverton Mountain for a few days.
