Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

hi
what is monterosa ski like for middle of the road intermediate? we have easily navigated reds in pila/marrilleva and folgarida, but for those of you that know it found the reds in Madesimo a bit too steep!!....... knowing what a varience there can be with italian red pistes can anybody give us a comparison to any of the above mentioned?
is it more madesimo, less pila or the other way round?!
thanks!

I don't know about either Madesimo or Pila but if you are middle of the road intermediates you will love the Monterosa ski area- lots of cruisey reds and not too steep.cbowls30,

Sounds like Champoluc would be the better base as the runs either side of Gressoney (and to Alagna) have a steep sections. If you like good food, wine and service without being ripped off, great scenery and cruising big distances the Monte Rosa is hard to beat. Just beware high winds closing the passes.

Haven't been Madesimo but been Pila and Monterosa and 16 other Italian facilities.

To me an Italian red run is an Italian Red run. Those in Monterosa are just same as in Pila. Within Italian red there could be small difference but that should not be a worry for any intermediate skier in my view. An Italian resort could downgrade or upgrade their runs for attracting certain visitors. One may laugh at the easy red of Pila, find it demanding when skiing a green in Valmorel and be surprised by the Swiss blue in Gstaad steeper than some Italian black.

Alagna on the other hand has a solo black for access to the village. It can be avoided by taking the cable cars. This black run is shielded from the sun most of the time and should be in good condition. It isn't steep by Italian standard and manageable by any skier who has no hang up with Italian red.

Remember Pila has only 70km piste but Monterosa has 180km so it is much bigger and wider straddling over 3 valleys of Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna.

BertieG, Just about sums it up perfectly. No problems with wind (fnarr fnarr) when we were there in March but it can cause lift closures. Many pistes are much longer than they appear on the piste maps, so you can ski them a good few times without getting bored. Good to know if you are stuck in your home valley when the wind gets up.

Aye.
But if there's wind forecast, they're quite good at warning folks.

+1 for Champoluc too - more going on.

Not there's a greatbdeal going on in Champoluc... Twisted Evil

However, Rascard Frantze just off piste Pistone into Cpluc is a lovely and welcoming lunch spot, the Gallion opposite the bubble lift is good for apres ski snacks and bottles of Prosecco and Franco at Le Sapin does the best steaks and tagliata in the world, beyond question.

We're off in half term, never been before, but this info (there are few videos too) and words from these forums helped swing it for us.
