Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Hire Flaine

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Has anyone got any recommendations for hiring skis in Flaine? Price seems to be fairly similar from what I've managed to find so far, but on one of the posts I found on Snowheads, a poster said that the actual shop you are hiring from is more important.

Also, I am never quite sure what it is I'm looking out for when I pick up skis in terms of quality i.e. am I getting what I paid for? Has anyone got any tips to help out? snowHead snowHead snowHead

slog67, There are a few hire shops in Flaine, for ease choose one in the part of the resort you are staying, Forum or Foret, from my experience they all have a good range of stock available ( only ever been outside of peak weeks though) I usually get best prices on line for the top or 2nd best grade of ski, the web site will give an indication of the range of skis you can get in each price range, this should then give you a good choice of good skis which are better than the majority of the skis which the TO promote and the option to change during the week if you want to try different skis. I have used Ski Set in Flaine Forum opposite the ski rink and been happy with their range and service. Check the condition of the skis and that the bindings are tight but release OK when needed.

The shop opposite the ice rink (the one crystal uses) tried to charge me 40 Euros for damage to the underside of a pair of skis I hired. They said they must have been off - piste to cause that damage. They were skis my 5 year old daughter used!! Like she went off piste. Just be careful that they don't try to scam you when you take them back to the shop.

Not sure where you are staying (Forum or Foret) but there are good options in each.
Key is to pre-book on line for the best prices
Personally we've always used Philippe & the guys at Skiset in the Foret commercial centre for our equipment - great service, great kit, will even open up when they're closed if you let them know.
Also heard good reports about Blackslide in Forum who do deals through Skimium

Thanks for the replies guys. I have booked with Intersport who are located in Foret - where we are staying - I will try to remember to post a review of how we get on with them. 4 more days to go snowHead snowHead snowHead

As you're staying in Foret, that's probably as good as any. Our crowd always used to get their gear from the shop next door to the self catering apartments (petits vacances?) just along and opposite the white grouse. Friendly staff who would happily deal with my wife and her oddsize feet issues - she must have gone back about 3 times before she found some boots that fitted her properly. At the end of the week, her dad offered to buy them for her as they fitted her so well. Despite the fact they were brand new out of the box at the beginning of the week, they still discounted them heavily as used stock.

Having a brain fart with names (not helped by it's now 3 years since we did Flaine)! If I remember them properly, I'll edit the post.

slog67, When you go to the apartment rental agency to collect key etc. you typically get a discount voucher for ski hire - I know you've now booked skis but it may be interesting to compare prices.

wadgebeast, I think the Intersport is based at the Grand Massif further up the road - so that will be a bit of a trek when we get there (cue moaning from the kids)

billb, Thanks for the info. You're right - it will be interesting to see which is the best thing to do, if we get to Flaine again.

Ooops still only 4 days to go - Embarassed looks like I was getting too ahead of myself with my last post - I'm going to blame the excitement snowHead snowHead snowHead

juliebeb, I've used ski-set and snowbrainer more then 10 times in the last 5 years - they are great and the prices are massively discounted over what you'll pay by hiring in the resort when you get there.

Just ensure that the hire shop is in the resort area you are staying in - I'm skiing in Galtur this year and the hire shop is in Kappl - a bus ride away wink

Can anyone recommend somewhere for a snowboard service in Flaine & give an idea of how much I might expect to pay?
