Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Broken Scaphoid

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

Long time lurker making his twice yearly appearance....

I fear I have broken the scaphoid bone in my right hand taking a tumble last week playing hockey. I am off for xrays tonight and it looks pretty cut and dried according to the doc I saw in minor injuries last night.

So, my question is whether any of you has experience of this, particularly skiing with a hand in a cast or splint as this is what I'm told I can expect. Am heading away for a week over New Year so really need to know if it's something that I can get away skiing with, assuming I don't fall on it again!

Thanks for any advice.

shaky, your insurers might have other ideas, they are the ones you need to be asking.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks Hells Bells, although I intend to tell my insurers as the last thing I want to do is void my cover, it's more the concern over whether the injury itself will affect skiing (cold, mobility etc).

You will not be able to hold a pole in a Scaphoid plaster.

Shaky, sorry if this is a bit late but some advice. A few years ago I broke my scaphoid 72 hours before heading to Morzine. I went anyway, sat the first day out which was torture but then got back on it. I skied the rest of the week, clearly without poles but had no problems. I was a little hesitant and avoided moguls but the rest of the resort was ok.

It depends on your level of skiing to start with I guess. The other thing is about plasters on an aircraft. You need either a backslab (ie half plaster/ half bandage) or a split in your plaster incase your wrist expands on the flight. I had a bit of an argument at the boarding desk despite having a back slab on and following the air line's instructions on the website.

Hope it all works out.
