Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ischgl - Advice Needed

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

After quite a few trips to various great resorts in Austria (salbaach, obergurgl, kitzbuhel, westendorf,st anton, obertaurn) , and having fallen for the unique charms of this wonderful country we quite fancy trying Ischgl in early January, a resort that we haven't been to, but which sounds great both for the skiing and the apres wink .

Problem I'm finding is that not many TO seem to go there, and what I can find is pretty damn expensive (I guess because its a 'world class resort').

If anyone knows of any smaller independant operators or chalet owners or any other options which could offer a week in early Jan, would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.....

neilkav,

DIY is straightforward.
Flights to Innsbruck/Munich or Zurich.
Then depending on numbers car rental or train to Landeck then post bus or taxi to Ischgl.
Tourist office will help with accomodation.
If still expensive stay down the valley at Kappl and bus/drive up.
I have been DIYing here for quite a few years.

neilkav, there are plenty of good Hotel Garni options. The Ischgl website is a good place to look. It's a fun place with as you say very good skiing and very good après. The lift system is good and the mountain restaurants aren't bad either. Few British skiers go there. Quite a large Bavarian presence.

neilkav, I've been glad of my few words of German when I've been there, but you'll survive without if you smile a lot and don't just shout in English

Pretty much all locals speak English. DIY is cheaper and easy to do. As well as Munich, Zurich and Innsbruck you could also fly into Salzburg or Freidrichsafen.

Ski Total have started going there - was reasonable if you have a decent sized group as you get discounts for heads in beds!

Salzburg is miles away - 3 1/2 hours drive. Memmingen is a better additional option but Innsbruck is without a doubt the best. I booked a company called Diddelcar from Memmingen last year for friends of ours for the transfers. Excellent and the local companies are always a lot cheaper than the resort taxi companies - in Ischgl and the Arlberg area in particular.

Hotel Alpenrose (google it) is the cheapest catered option as far as I am aware. In January for half board it's about 45 euros pppn, taking into account reductions on the standard rate if you book early and don't need daily room cleaning or a parking space.
