Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

2005 "Hottest year on record"

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
According to NASA via this PisteHors article ...
Quote:

"Barring a major incident (volcanic eruption, nuclear war, someone leaving the door open on one of those American style fridges) climatologists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies are warning that 2005 will be the hottest year on record. Average temperatures taken from 7,200 weather stations around the world already make this year 0.4°C warmer than 1998, the previous hottest year."

Interestingly the spring of 1999 was if I recall correctly the last time much of the alps got stupidly large amounts of snow, I recall that being the year Wengen got 1.5M of snow in less than a week, with all the disasterous things that happened, I wonder if there is any link in the weather patterns Puzzled

Hmm. Misleading PisteHors headline, I think - bearing in mind that temperatures are approaching those of 130,000 years ago. In terms of our lifetimes (even mine wink ) things look hotter than they have ever been, though.

Nick, be fair!

The actual pistehors headline includes the words "set to be". The use of the word "record" implies that the projection is made on the basis of actual meteorological records only - i.e. temperature readings over (I'd imagine) about 100-150 years.

It's only mid-October, which is why the words "set to be" are important. I guess if an unusually cold November and December sets in, 2005 won't be the hottest year on record.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Gawd, here we go again. Can I be bothered? Not really.

But I would point out DG that the title I used for this thread was, quote, "according to NASA" - referring to the line "Studies are warning that 2005 will be the hottest year on record" (note will be, not "set to be").

Anyway, the "set to be" factor is - or should be - obvious to anyone who's checked out his calendar recently. It's October 2005, DG.

I know that this is digressing slightly, but is it true that, in the UK, 1976 was the hottest summer on record. I can't remember as I was only 6 years old.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Today was 16th October and it was the most fabulous day here in the North East. Temp must have reached 20+c. I can hardly remember a hard frost from January to April. Gotta be up there.

There's a good article in The Denver Post today on the impact of global warming on skiing in the US - and Andermatt in Switzerland (citing the resort's glacier insulation measures this summer):

jb1970, I don't know about the hottest summer on record but I can remember it was one of those summers like you get on holiday where you just know the weather tomorrow and the next week and the week after is going to be hot and sunny. I don't remember the temps being exceedingly high like the record-breaking temps we have had fairly recently but it was hot over a long period of time. (I was a kid at the time, honest! Little Angel )

jb1970, could be. I was doing my first A levels in Brighton that year, and I do remember that it was absolute hell trying to concentrate on Physics and Biology when I would much rather have been down at the water cooling off, or at the Hungry Years doing other things wink It was definitely the hottest summer that I ever encountered in Britain, but then again, I have not spent much time in Britain since then so may not be the best person to comment.

stricly speaking, a open fridge does actually heat the environment as it is not a perfectly effiencent cooling process.

I detect an example of the Davidof sense of humour, rather than the thinking of a NASA scientist, here. I least, I hope so! Very Happy
