Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Insurance

I'm about to renew my ski insurance and I know there's a chat about it somewhere on the site but can't find it! I've heard essential travel are good and they certainly look amazing, but I don't want to commit until I know that it's good for someone who skis many weeks in the season, off piste, hell etc.... Ski Club are expensive as you need to join in order to get the best deal - although the insurance is good and was excellent with an accident I had a few years ago.

Hope someone can help out there! Puzzled

Hi Cipria,

Am in the same position myself. You will find lots on here if you use the forum search facility but it can be quite confusing as we are all looking for something that suits our own particular needs.

I was at my wits end last year as like many people I had been insured with Direct Travel for years and then found their cover drastically altered. We became known as Direct Travel Refugees - In the end I went with SCGB but this year I have been researching again and the best I have found for our needs (off piste without a guide in particular) has been Fogg Travel which was recommended previously by another snowhead.

Good luck with your search.

We used to insure it SCGB but now very expensive for slightly older people - so we have decided to insure with MPI this year which will cover us for the long stretches that we spend out there but allow us to break the trip for return back to UK in February.

I've gone with MPI also this year after some research. They were good at adapting the policy to suit our needs. And the sensible approach to off piste was a breath of fresh air!

I was looking into this last night, and found that protectyourbubble.com gave a pretty competitive quote with reasonable cover levels though only 17 days of winter sports cover in an annual policy. I've also used direct travel in the past and been happy enough. I think they also have a 17 day winter sports limit for their cheaper policies, but increase this for the higher levels of cover. Fortunately I've never needed to make a claim, but that is where you start to discover whether the company you've used is any good.

kieranm, unfortunately the maximum ski cover with Direct Travel annual policy is now 17 days per year and not 17 days per trip regardless of the level of cover you choose.

I have just renewed my policy with Snowcard - turned out the best deal for me, with long trips and a lot of skiing. Their "extreme adventure" option offers unlimited winter sports.

pam w, Snowcard, very irritatingly, insists on one being UK resident.

Because, clearly, that means you are more responsible.

A quick update on this. I took out the annual policy last season and it's still in force but I've already used 14 days of winter sports cover, so not enough to cover the PSB. A quick call and they've added an extra 3 days cover for just £13.25, so the annual policy can still be good value even with the 17 day restriction.

I'm relying on the Austrian Alpine Club policy, coupled with the EHIC card - was going to take out the AMEX policy (120 days of skiing per year covered), but they have a 4 week individual trip limit and our first trip will be 8 weeks (just within the AAC individual trip limit).

Having only just joined this forum I am delighted to say that you guys are paying dividends already! I am going to be skiing a few weeks this season each for 2 or 3 weeks and returning home for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. I contacted all the people above and only one company could do it and at a very reasonable price. The company are MPI so many thanks to BenAS for suggesting them.

idkwia, Glad you got yourself sorted and that this forum helped. As a matter of interest, why did you prefer the MPI option to the AAC and AMEX ones? My circumstances may be different next year, so I'm interested for future reference. The ERV policies recommended by Natives.com are also worth looking at, by the way.

I didn't do the AAC because it seems that you have to couple it with the EHIC card whereas MPI you don't and if I need medical help I don't want to risk messing about with forms etc. I didn't look at the AMEX one to be honest but just assumed they would be more expensive or you would need to take one of their cards which may not be true. MPI have charged me £109 for a year's multitrip cover with a max of 32 days skiing at any one time and they cover off piste without a guide so I thought that is a good deal. I also liked the idea that you can really adjust parts of the policy depending on your own needs which gives great flexibility. It is the best ski insurance that I have ever seen, that is for sure.

idkwia, Thanks, if you're getting off piste without a guide cover included in that, it seems very good.

I am and I have just checked the policy details confirming it so all seems goo to me.

check that carefully, idkwia. When I looked at multi trip option with MPI I definitely read that as 32 days during the period of the insurance (ie all year) which wasn't enough. Maybe ring them, if in doubt?

I found Snowcard best for what I need.

idkwia, I've had another look - I think you're right about the 31 days cover per trip, as long as you've specified that at the outset - but that wasn't enough for me anyway, so I didn't pursue that option.

Yes, I am definitiely right. I also think you can have more than 31 days cover per trip, that it seems is the beauty of this policy, you can tailor it to suit your needs. I think you can get up to 90 days in one trip. Best thing is to call them as I wanted to be sure that I had it right, they were very helpful.
