The other point is that if I'm being transferred to the back streets of Morzine, Chamonix etc in a winter storm I'd rather have a bus driver with local knowledge than a city cabbie who might get a couple of fares a year up there + a sat nav.

Chamexpress,
"Now, you can take your test in a 6 tonne, 30 seat midibus, and then can go straight out and drive 80 passengers in a double-deck Neoplan coach (think national express) which is 24 tonnes loaded. That is crazy! "
Bit of digression (?) but similar with HGV For example you can pass C1 + E in an unladen transit van (with normal car type hydraulic brakes) and "camping" trailer (Total length about 7m) then go off and drive a fully loaded 7.5t airbraked truck with 4.5t drawbar trailer total length 15m+.

I can't understand what all the fuss is about? I can never envisage, no matter what the circumstances, a Genevan taxi driver being bothered to drive a punter to a ski resort. If he's not back in the queue in 20 minutes he's will hacked off.
This is similar to the French taxi drivers in Chamonix getting all upset about 'foreign' cab drivers 'stealing' their fares. The reality is no self respecting cabbie is going to do a drop off from Cham to Argentiere after dinner time!
My God, it takes them all their abilities not to putain me when I ask them to drop me off in Onex NOT using the autoroute.
Seems to me there's plenty room for all

It's human nature tho.. How's it any different from the unemployed dolescum that was interviewed in Peterborough who, in one interview, were complaining about the Eastern Europeans 'stealing' their jobs, and in a different interview refusing to work in the fields, as they wanted something better, when the picking work was what most of the Eastern Europeans were doing.
They see someone else being successful, and they want a bit of it or will knock the down.

It's different because these are working people that are being referred to, not "dolescum", who have paid for qualifications, licences and so on and who have mortgages and families to support from their earnings.

rob@rar, you don't see the difference between "dolescum" who will refuse to get a job and people who work for a living? Whether the Swiss taxi drivers have a point or not in this case, I think comparing them to "dolescum" is just... ah well, nevermind.

Apologies, wanted to edit my post and deleted it accidentally.
I don't think that the Geneva taxi drivers were being compared to dolescum, but if they were then I don't agree with it.
I don't think you can distinguish between the taxi drivers and the transfer company's owners or staff - they are all just trying to make a living. Regulations should be in place to ensure safe and appropriate service for the general public, not favour one type of company over another.

miranda, I think the point that was being made, perhaps not as clearly as it could have been was that (and I have no information to support this position) the CHF taxi drivers generally won't take a group of 5 people plus ski gear to a resort 150 kilometres away. So the UK/French or any other nationality providing this service is taking nothing or very little away from their income.
So to put it another way, I sell shoes and you sell fishing boats. I see lot's of people buying your fishing boats and want a slice of the action but don't have or want to actually sell fishing boats. I have a word with my mates who own the market and they tell you sure you can still sell fishing boats but to do so you have to pay me an extra 400CHF. I am happy because I get another 400CHF (less my mates cut I assume) and there are less people selling fishing boats in the market so maybe just maybe they'll by my shoes now instead. And if they don't I haven't lost anything because I didn't sell fishing boats in the first place. Net result I am no worse off and most likely better off from those people who stump the 400CHF to sell fishing boats...
Overly simplified and notwithstanding any safety issues that about covers it.
Anyway time to start a new thread - European ski holidays are dead because we can't use UK TO's guide/hosting service so they are all going to pull out because of the ESF and we can't fly to Geneva because the swiss taxis want a slice of the action for nothing...

I actually believe that there is a special Daily Mail journo/sub-editor mindset which is kind of like a satirical troll on tinternet. They specialise in saying what would be the most DM like thing in any particular circumstance and/or what will get them the most retweets/links rather than what they or any other rational human being actually believe. That and template articles always have spaces for property value and an aerial photo of any vaguely desirable property.

fatbob, That journo was replaced by a relatively small piece of script about 3 years ago, and is freely available online as the DailyMail-o-Matic
Also available, is the Daily Mail Oncological Ontology , a site devoted to tracking the DMs obsession with what causes and cures cancer.

Chamexpress, are you not still running a bus carrying a UK number plate? I dont entirely see how you can do that and claim everything to be kosher?
legally if we drove a car without it going back to the uk every three months were obliged to register it french, but you seem to have been and are still running it for at least 2yrs that I can remember....

If you return your car to the uk once a year for it's MOT and pay UK road tax, you only need to "leave France" once every 3 months to be above board - it's sometimes very useful living next to 2 international borders

Hi Eddie.
I'm afraid the answer to that one is commercially sensitive information, so I would refer you back to my earlier post concerning lawyers etc. What I can confirm is that we are perfectly legal, (That's what lawyers are paid for), had our 5 yearly inspection by the French DDE licencing authority who inspect all the vehicles and the whole operation, tachos etc. and passed with flying colours without even a 'process verbal'. THat's why we drum into our drivers 'paperwork, paperwork, paperwork'. The buses to which you refer have all been back to the UK for their MOT. Infact the last one is there at the moment.
Idris gave you one clue, but not the biggest clue

Very interesting all round. What is the story with ordinary French taxis using the international side of Geneva? Is my local taxi driver right when he said he wasn't allowed? (or is he just scared of getting his tyres slashed?)
Chamexpress - if it takes you 15 minutes longer to get round to the French side of GVA airport your drivers are uncommonly slow. I take the point about the amount of parking available, though.
This thread should stop some of those unctuous posts about Switzerland in the thread about the bloody ESF.

Idris, yes, fair enough, I never go near the place on a Saturday. Not even for a bottle of malt whisky, laundryman. I can sometimes be persuaded to go on a Sunday, but for more than a single bottle.
One of these days it is going to occur to people in this industry that having the great majority of people arriving and leaving on Saturdays is just not the best way to make use of the available resources, whether they be expensive vehicles, congested runways or roads where lengthy holdups are regarded as routine. It's a very European model - from what I've read things are different in the US, where people take holidays for varied lengths of time and providers respond to this demand. Some French providers appear to prefer to have empty beds for weeks rather than take on anything but the standard Sat/Sat bookings.
The growing number of DIY holiday makers will probably make a difference - and UK accommodation owners, if not French ones, are doing some good business letting on a more flexible basis to people travelling on a Tuesday or other quiet, cheap, day.

What would happen when I took my car out to france for a season (mid-dec to mid-apr) and hadn't done the odd GVA run - picking up friends rather than being a 'mini-cab'
I wasn't aware of any legislation that said I had to leave the country during that 90 days?
