Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking at going to the states late Jan for 7-10 days and have found a good deal for the Roost lodge, Vail.
Does anyone know of or been there?. It seems a bit far out, but there are free shuttles for the twon centre and skiing.

mac, I don't know it, but looking at the address, you can't be too far from West Vail, where the Sand Bar is - which is good for a night out. There's also a few good shops around there too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes, in the description it states that it's in west Vail. How is the town set out, is there a big distnace between west V and the main town, are the shuttles worth using or better off with a taxi?

mac, there's a shuttle runs from early morning to around 7pm (I think. maybe later). Don't bother about taxis.

Here's the summary info from last year:

And the route map:

It's well known as the cheapest hotel in town. The rooms are not massive by US standards, but clean and comfortable, and there is a hot tub and pool. The hotel shuttle will take you skiing each day. You're also on the West Vail Red and West Vail Green free Town of Vail bus routes (same route, different directions around the loop), which run every 30 mins, so if you're in the Village of an evening you'll just have to get the timing right.
You're about 5 mins walk from the main part of West Vail - an ugly strip mall which has the aforementioned and lively Sandbar (live music some nights) and several other restaurants, including the best Chinese in town. And lots of cheap fast food places. Also Safeway and City Market supermarkets.

Thanks for the info. Wife may not like the fact it's known as the cheapest hotel in town so may have to look else where, but looking around at the resort info, certainly like the idea of vail.

I'd suggest you don't tell her then! Or point out that it is close to the chinese and the Sandbar, and that if you'd booked in to a more expensive one, then you wouldn't have been able to afford the romantic dinner for two at the Game Creek...

mac, I stayed at the Roost Lodge about 5 years ago. It is just like one of those French Campanile/Formule 1 hotels, ie. it is a motel no more/no less. For us it was a means to an end to be able to ski Vail without breaking the bank. There was a shuttle-bus to the slopes in the morning and evening which was fine. Yes there is a "hot-tub" and a heated swimmimg pool inside a kind of greenhouse construction. The breakfasts were dire comprising a pastry and coffee out of a machine. However so long as you know what you are going to get - no problem. The hotel is stuck out on the Interstate highway and to be able to go out for dinner in the evening a car is really essential. We loved Vail and going out and about in the evening - we had some great steaks (12ozs) at Minturn nearby. Best ski holiday I have ever had!!

DAVID SNELL, there's a great mexican in Minturn - can't remember the name, but the margaritas and fajitas were excellent!

DAVID SNELL, the steaks were probably at the Minturn Country Club (cook them yourself job).

Checked out some other reviews on line for this hotel and also the mountain lodge at Breckenridge and both got slated.
I was looking at these as igluski.com had a half price holiday offer on. Last week in Jan, flights, transfers and accomadation for £240. The only problem was having to get the lifft pass and airport parking through them too. These turned out to be ok, £203 for a week pass at vail and £6.75 a day parking. Seemed to good to miss, but having looked at the hotels, maybe not. I'll wait and get a last minute deal like previous years. Thanks for the info though.

 You know it makes sense.

Martin Bell, Hi, Nothing to do with the Roost thread, but yes you are right - we cooked the steaks ourselves and they were huge.
mac, I would not discount the Roost Lodge completely, because as Martin stated it is going to be the cheapest lodging in town. and so long as you know what you are going to get you'll be OK there.
To get something ultra cheap in January you need to be looking to an operator who has bought the rites to a property for the whole season whether he fills it or not, and that in Vail is most likely to be an operator who has chalets. I would certainly have a a word with Ski Solutions to see what they have on their books now. Ski Solutions is not an operator but they are an excellent specialist in ski - ing travel agent. Happy hunting.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
I have not stayed at either of them, but I have been inside rooms at both, and I would put the Roost perhaps a step up from the Breck Mountain Lodge - although from the BML you are walking distance to the lifts and village centre, which you're not from the Roost.
When I lived there, Skiworld seemed to have the most chalets in Vail, either in East Vail or West Vail. There are no "chalets" close to the centre, because people who own houses there are so rich that they have no need to rent them out when not using them.
