Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all,
I'm an experienced piste skier (20 odd years) who has never ventured off piste (embarrassing but true!). I'm looking to do so in Les Arcs in Jan - can anyone recommend a good school/instructor/guide?
Thanks in anticipation!

Call into the Bureau des Guides http://www.guidesdesarcs.com/. I have found them very good. Arc Adventures are also good, but need booking more in advance. Both do off piste groups as well as private guiding.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I have an off piste lesson booked with new Generation - had a one on moguls last year and we did some between piste stuff - it was great and have heard really good things about them - especially John T as an instructor - you have to let them know in avance if you want off piste as they need to book transceivers etc..

John Thomas in NewGen is very good. Another possibility would be Rob Hutchison who used to work for Newgen and now works independently in Les Arcs. You can reach him by phone on 0033 6 22 74 49 83.

scaleyback, which valley are you staying in? If 2000/1950, I can put you in touch with the guys @ Spirit, who we've had a fair bit of experience with, and would recommend. If 1800/1600 /Peisey, then the above recommendations are sound.

scaleyback, Where are you staying in 1600? Last year we were late getting over to 1800 to meet our guide due to the amount of snow that fell over night.

We're in the Mont Blanc lodge next to the Grizzly chair lift. It'll be my first time in Les Arcs but too much snow will be a problem I'll happily deal with!

...er, Scaleyback, I think you'll find you are staying at Vallandry which is at 1600m but NOT in Les Arcs 1600, which is half way around the mountain. Just thought I'd post you a message so you don't get a transfer to the wrong resort - which is about an hour away by road!
The good news is, you are right next to the Grizzly lift (about 30m), and Mont Blanc bar which is great in the evenings and for lunch. If you fancy going out for a few turns and practicing your powder turns after a lesson, I'll be around all January and know a few good spots.
John at Newgen is good but book ASAP - they are busy

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
