Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

11th October massive temperature/rainfall variation across UK

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Once again we are witnessing a massive difference across the UK in terms of tewmperature variation and weather.

Yesterday the minimum temperature in London was 18C whilst the maximum temperature in Aviemore was only 8C.

Also much of Eastern England has been dry whilst the West, Wales and Scotalnd has been deluged. Pembrokeshire received 110mm in 24 hrs and Carlisle 90mm. Less than an hour and a half from Carlisle here in North Yorkshire I've only recorded 5mm or so.

The Cairngorms have a covering of snow http://www.cairngormmountain.com/cams/image2.jpg Shocked

For a small, narrow Island on the edge of Europe we can occssionally get some spectacular variable weather.

Stockton on Tees - Overcast but dry. Go for a walk in more than a T shirt and it gets very sweaty. Most pleasant.

Is this usual? We've all got a tendency to be forgetful about previous years ("I can't believe it's getting dark so early"), but the temperature variations do seem more than usual.

And by this, I don't just mean across the country on a single day but also through the year. We've had warm days in January and October now - some with warm mornings, others that are chilly - and days in the summer that felt pretty cold. The temperatures seem to be all over the place. Or am I just getting old?

Alan,

We certainly seem to have had several extreme differences across the Uk this year. In the summer when it was 32C one day in London it was only 12C in Northern Scotland. That's enormous by UK standards.

Not sure whether any of the climate change models are suggesting that global warming could lead to greater differentiation between the north of the UK and the south ?

It may simply be that now we have all the information immediately to hand its easier to spot the big differences.
