Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

From Skipedia - what image could possibly be more suited to advertising children's ski holidays?

Bit weird.

Not sure I can see any real link to Jimmy Saville though. The chain is a bit of a stretch.

That's a truly weird ad. Apart from the grotesque photo, the wording would never have been approved by a native english speaker, it's just wrong. Not to mention ungrammatical. I can never understand why they don't just run stuff like that past a native speaker, preferably one with some advertising experience, but any old well educated Brit would do. Like the Hotel by the A26 somewhere called "Sunset Price". So very wrong. Even big resorts have some real bloomers in the English version of their websites. Some of the Les Saisies one was literally incomprehensible, a few years back - the instructions on how to buy lift passes on line made no sense. It's a lot better now, but still not brilliant. Trouble is sometimes that they translate too literally from the French, and even if the result is grammatically correct, it just doesn't convey the same effect. Often the very flowery language of the French copy just sounds daft in English "A laughing sun will generously lighten your days". That sort of stuff.

A Mayrhofen camping site which promised "Festivities in the Woodlands" became a family joke, 50 years ago.

pam w, I'm quite convinced there's a business there.

It takes me 5 minutes to correct a menu, f'r instance. Add 10 minutes for accepting the job and invoicing, and I reckon you could have a handy 200eu/hour job for abou a month in Winter and a couple of weeks in summer.

Fish translation however, is quite tricky!!

I did translate a menu for one of our neighbouring restaurants, who spoke not a word of English. A bit pointless though, as anybody who spoke no French at all would struggle even to book a table (one of my linguistically-challenged friends gave up).

I did send an email to the Les Saisies tourist office offering to help translate the brochure and website, pointing out that my French was by no means perfect but my English was pretty close. wink I wasn't after being paid.

They didn't reply......

All the height restriction boards next to the lifts in Three Valleys read "I am too small to go there by my own". Unless they've been changed in the last couple of years. Staggering they didn't run that by someone with a basic grasp of English before getting all the signs made.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

pam w, Nooo.. !! We have hours of fun with French menus! One of our favourites is "Paving Slab of Turkey" followed by chocolate moose ( or mouse!) I agree the lift pass documents take a bit of effort - I find it works better to read the French than decipher the English...The stuff we get from our letting agent is also laughable. However my French isn't perfect so I can forgive... Shock Laughing
