Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Bourg d'Oisans / Alpe d'Huez

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi Very Happy

We are staying in Bourg d'Oisans over New Year with family - ages ranging from 9/12/17/21 and upwards! Varying ability skiiers.

Alpe d'Huez seems to be the closest ski resort, but there are other smaller places from what I can see (have never been to this area before). Does anyone have any recommendations for parking the cars/ski hire i.e would it be better for us to head for one of the smaller resorts and take lifts/ski to Alpe d'Huez or is the journey/parking etc all ok there anyway?

Any advice or recommendations gratefully received

Yes Alpe d'Huez is the nearest for Bourg d'O'sians but Les Deux Alps isn't far away either. Both places do not have a parking problem in all my visits and you should be able to find a place close to the chairlifts. Have parked at a few the satellite lift stations too but they were even easier to find a place. New year should be fine. By comparison parking at Bourg d'Osians could involve more walking.

Alpe D'Huez does have about 30 hairpin bends whereas L2A has 20. The roads are normally well clear of snow but do prepared a dump could happen before it could be cleared during a visit.

The only thing I would say is don't bother on a Saturday unless you go up early or come down late, the traffic can (will) be horrendous.

We stayed just outside Bourg D Oisans one year, at Allemont, most days we drove to Vaujanay where parking was easy, we also drove to A' D' Huez and L2A and had no problems parking at either place. Our then teenagers loved using the indoor pool at Vaujanay after skiing and also the indoor/outdoor pool at one of the other two resorts, Puzzled can`t remember which it was rolling eyes

you can access L2A and ADH from satellite resorts. barely worth doing from Bourg for ADH, but going to Venosc might save a little driving if you want to go up to LDA

saw some nice pics from Alpe du Grand Serre which is a little resort in that area. might be worth a look if the snow if good

smokeysbandit, half hour drive up the hill to Alpe d'Huez, most parking on the Bergers sector. However, 2Alpes is effectively closer if you drive to Venosc (15 mins) and get the telecabin up tp resort, something which also saves you a great deal on both fuel and general wear and tear on the car.

There are rental shops in 2Alpes which also provide a ski locker service for customers (eg Jacques Sports, Brun Sports). Alternatively you can hire from Bleach in Bourg d'Oisans, though I don't know what their stock/availability is like - email them and ask, website here: http://www.bleach-xtremsports.com

No point whatsoever in driving all the way from here to Vaujany or Oz. Definitely spend a day at Alpe de Grand Serre though, marvellous (assuming there's enough snow cover at that point - it's low). You can ski it on either the Alpe d'Huez or the 2Alpes pass.

Or drive to Huez and take lifts from there. Slightly closer than ADH - tho less parking.

^^^ not really worth it IME. by the time you have faffed with the Huez lift, you could have driven up and parked near the main lift station.
That said, if you get stuck in the Sarenne gorge, you can walk out to Huez quite easily Cool

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Also ... if you buy a six day pass for 2Alpes, they will let you up the Venosc lift to resort after 3pm the day before in order to sort out equipment hire. Show the passes and receipts to the lifty.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

That's what we did too. Roads clear and no problems. Very quiet runs back down too.
